An Aussie cow udder cream, an apt nickname, and a mother of an idea

MooGoo began as literal "moo goo" – goo for cows – in Australia. Of course it did; a sense of humour about naming things fits the Aussie profile, does it not? Besides, what else might one call a thick white paste meant to keep cow udders supple? Have to admit the name called out to me. *grin*

That goo for cows was very beginning of a range of natural (and dermatologically tested) personal care made for humans with sensitive skin. In 2005, founder Craig Jones decided to reformulate the udder conditioner when he discovered that, despite its less-than-elegant texture, his mum was using it to treat her psoriasis.

Now the MooGoo range, newly available in Canada and available in the USA too, includes shampoo, conditioner, dry shampoo, deodorant, lip balm and of course a range of emollient moisturizers for all skin types in need of TLC. Dental care is also in the offing. (The range available to the US is wider, fyi.)

In Canada, the MooGoo range includes hair care and deodorant.

moogoo marketing notes

I'm not much for folks claiming fear of chemicals in personal care – everything on the planet, including humans, is made up of chemicals, and everything on the planet, including humans, can be toxic if the dose and administration hits danger levels, even water and even air. At first I thought MooGoo wasn't exactly claiming such fear, only including it in testimonials, but there it is in the lip balm descriptions. *sigh.*

Then there's the idea that some ingredients are considered "filler" – that's another misinfomarketing concept from the so-called "clean" purveyors that means nothing. Ingredients cost money. Who's going to waste cash putting stuff they don't need in their formulas? As for paraben avoidance, it's not something I look for simply because the old study that caused the ridiculous furor has been discredited (get the facts and references here via @skinperspective on Instagram).

All that aside, the name MooGoo just makes me happy, and the packaging is attractive, and I know some of you will really like what the brand has to offer. In the end, for the most part it's about the product and efficacy, not the marketing.

moogoo creams and lip balm review

My interest was caught by MooGoo's Natural Skin Milk Udder Cream, Natural Full Cream Moisturizer, Natural Soothing MSM Moisturizer, and lip balms.

MooGoo Cow Lick lip balms in Natural, Strawberry Tinted and Tingling Honey; MooGoo Natural Full Cream Moisturizer, Natural Soothing MSM Moisturizer and Natural Skin Milk Udder Cream.

Before we get going on specific products, please note: there is no actual fresh milk or cream in MooGoo formulas because shelf-life. Instead the brand uses hydrolyzed milk protein in some of the moisturizers; apparently it helps skin feel a bit firmer.

Of the three moisturizers, MooGoo Natural Skin Milk Udder Cream ($16.99 CAD/$10.90 USD) was the first, and is more lightweight (in a good way) than one might expect from udder cream. Key ingredients include sweet almond oil, olive fruit oil, aloe vera, rice bran oil, vitamin E and hydrolyzed milk protein.

Natural Full Cream Moisturizer ($19.99 CAD/$12.50 USD) was the next, a richer formulation that includes coconut oil, olive-sourced squalane, and honey.

Their Natural Soothing MSM Moisturizer ($22.99 CAD/$15.50 USD), also lightweight and made with coconut oil and squalane, contains organic sulfur (aka MSM) for the soothing promised on the tube. (Full ingredient lists from the brand website are below for your perusal.)

If textures are your thing, you'll enjoy the MooGoo moisturizers immensely. They're creamy and silky and comforting, and sink so nicely into the skin. The lip balms are a hit for me as well, starting with a chuckle-worthy name, Cow Lick ($5.99 CAD/$4.50 USD), on the unflavoured option. The other two are Strawberry (tinted), and Tingling Honey. The formula glides on smoothly and feels soft (not oily or waxy) on lips as it conditions. I rarely reach for stick balm because I dislike balms that drag, but these don't do that. In fact I'm wearing Cow Lick right now; it lives on my desk by my laptop.

A combination of natural pear and vanilla scents most of the skin formulas, I think, as well as the shampoo and conditioner. I have the fussiest nose, unfortunately, but that just means I'd be thrilled with an unscented or fragrance-free version of any of the moisturizers I tried – I truly enjoyed the textures, how well my skin absorbed them, and how soft my skin felt afterward.

On the sustainability front, MooGoo outlines their approach, which includes manufacturing in a carbon-neutral facility that recycles its water and recyclable packaging made with recycled materials, on their website.

If you've tried any MooGoo already, please do let me know what you think!

UPDATE: Since posting an image of MooGoo products on Instagram, although the post itself seems to have tanked traffic-wise, I've received DMs from people who are already familiar with MooGoo and love it. In the comments of that first post, @msmoorey writes, "I've switched up my skincare to include Tretinoin this year and the Full Cream moisturizer has been a life saver."

@wu_crew18 says, "Aussie here, I absolutely love MooGoo for my young girls and myself. It's a cult favourite!" And @ranisheen says, "My favourite stuff for kid bubble baths!"

In fact, Rani, an Aussie and longtime beauty editor in Canada, also told me that she is a fan of the shampoo's oatmeal scent, and uses the bubbly wash for her little son, Levi. "Also, the scalp cream is amazing for baby cradle cap," she added.

And under the giveaway post, @the.janine.experience (nope, it's not me) commented, "This stuff worked WONDERS on my friend's eczema."

MooGoo skin and hair care is available at moogooskincare.ca and amazon.ca in Canada and via moogoousa.com in the USA. Worth noting: the brand offers to refund your "MOOla" if you aren't completely satisfied with your purchases.
