If you're running out today to pick up a gift for your mum, have a look at the suggestions below for options that don't look like a rushed decision or 11th-hour acquisition. In Canada, some are available at select Shoppers Drug Mart stores, some are at Sephora, and some are department-store brands – at least one of these retail outlets should be easily accessible, right?
Okay, yes, there are a couple of items that involve online shopping, and thus won't make it to your mother in time for this Sunday, but I've left them in so you can add them to your Pinterest *gifts* list for future reference. Efficient, I say!
Want more options to consider? Pop over to Liza's most excellent and thoughtful Mother's Day gift guide here, which includes a variety of gorgeous perfumes and clever lifestyle options too. (And if mum's into fragrance, Liza's Spring mood-boosting-scents story is here.)
yves saint laurent volupté liquid color balm
Fancy lip colour is always an excellent gift. Bonus points if you know whether Mum prefers neutral, nude or vivid lip shades, but you don't have to get the shade right anymore because, thanks to the way Sephora does business, all retailers will exchange or refund (with receipt) at least within 30 days (or 365 at Sephora).
Gloss is flattering for faces of any age, but especially so on more mature women. Yves Saint Laurent Volupté Liquid Color Balm ($40 CAD and $32 USD at sephora.com) comes in a range of beautiful shades and is, as per its name, more emollient balm than sticky gloss, so it's comfortable on drier lips. I like them so much I bought the one in the flatlay photos.
Available at Sephora, department stores including Hudson's Bay and Nordstrom, and select *Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutiques.
guerlain rouge g customizable lipstick + case
There's fancy lip colour and there's fancy lip colour. Guerlain Rouge G lipstick cases are a marriage between beautifully designed, seriously weighty tubes and double-mirror compacts. Last year the venerable house of beauty debuted the highly collectable mix-and-match Rouge G Customizable Lipstick ($38 CAD and $33 USD at sephora.com) collection that features lipsticks in satin, shimmer and matte shades, as well as an interchangeable Rouge G Customizable Lipstick Case ($21 CAD and $22 USD at sephora.com) in a variety of textures and colours. New designs come out every season, so you could start Mum's collection, or add to it if she's already got one underway. (Note, however, that if Mum has a Guerlain Rouge G lipstick in a mirrored case from before 2018, a new Customizable Lipstick Case won't fit it.)
Available at Sephora, department stores including Hudson's Bay and Nordstrom, and select Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutiques.
chanel les beiges natural eyeshadow collection
Mum doesn't have to be an eyeshadow addict to geek out about a gorgeous neutral palette – specifically the new Chanel Les Beiges Natural Eyeshadow Collection palette ($110 CAD at thebay.com and $70 USD at chanel.com). Look at it! I haven't dipped into mine yet, but oh boy am I going to. Click the next hyperlink to see how Chanel Global Creative Makeup and Colour Designer Lucia Pica uses these shades on Marine Vacth, the face of this year's Les Beiges campaign.
Available at chanel.com, department stores such as Hudson's Bay, Nordstrom, Saks and *Holt Renfrew, and select *Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutiques.
olivia burton london meant to bee watch
Okay, it's not makeup, but whatever – the word *beauty* still applies. British accessory brand Olivia Burton London looks to vintage and runway trends for sweet inspiration. Founded in 2012 by a pair of bffs and ex-fashion buyers, the collection includes conversation-piece watches with whimsical, embellished faces. The classic look of the PR sample in the flatlay shots is more my speed, but the above Olivia Burton London Meant to Bee 3D Bee watch ($310 CAD and $240 USD at nordstrom.com) is just. so. pretty. There's no guarantee that this particular watch is available everywhere, but all the Olivia Burton London timepieces are lovely, whether simple like mine or extravagantly botanical like the one above, or somewhere in between.
Available at department stores such as Hudson's Bay and Nordstrom.
lilah b. divine duo lip & cheek
If Mum's super into "clean beauty," a Lilah B. Divine Duo Lip & Cheek ($56 CAD and $46 USD at sephora.com) is a delightful little luxury. The small, smooth, pebble-shaped compact slides open and has expensive-feeling heft, and the silky tinted balm has a satisfying semi-sheer pigment load and comes in a range of skin-flattering shades. A mix of synthetic and natural ingredients, the formula checks the vegan, cruelty-free, and gluten-free boxes.
Available at Sephora and *Holt Renfrew.
céla essential balm miracle multi-use oil
Canadian natural beauty brand Céla has the most gorgeous packaging. The Céla Essential Balm Miracle Multi-Use Oil ($45 CAD at thisiscela.com and $36 USD at neimanmarcus.com) is particularly appealing, with its lavender-and-bergamot scent and skin-softening benefits. Important to note that the balm tends to liquefy easily; expect a fluid consistency when you upend the tube. If Mum prefers a balm-like texture, maybe advise her to keep the tube in the fridge? It's so display-worthy though – it deserves favourable real estate on her vanity.
Available at *thisiscela.com, *Hammam Spa and Neiman Marcus.
giorgio armani beauty neo-nude a-blush
Another small multi-use luxury, the Giorgio Armani Beauty Neo Nude A-Blush ($49 CAD and $38 USD at sephora.com) can be used to tint lips as well as cheeks and comes in five, sheer, water-based liquid shades that create beautifully natural results with a light application as well as layered. I bought 30 Peach and 51 Raspberry and love the delicious flush they deliver.
Available at Sephora and department stores such as Hudson's Bay, *Holt Renfrew and Nordstrom.
fresh rose deep hydration sleeping mask
Fresh is one of those skincare lines that murmurs "I'm a lovely gift" most seductively. The 20-year-old brand's Soy Face Cleanser and Sugar Lip Treatments are wildly popular, as is its range of facial mask gels and creams, as well as its Seaberry Moisturizing Face Oil (a personal favourite). Newest out is the Fresh Rose Deep Hydration Sleeping Mask ($60 CAD and $50 USD at sephora.com), an appealing, fragrant duo of gelée mask and cream sleeping mask. Step one, the gelée, feels a refreshing treat on skin, and delivers a boost of hydration; step two, the sleep mask cream, locks that moisture in while Mum slumbers.
Available at Sephora and department store Nordstrom.
province apothecary dual action jade facial roller
Jade rollers have experienced a revival over the last few years as North American skincare regimens have become more ritual than regimen. Aside from how really good a facial-roller session feels on the face, jade-roller advocates say benefits can include a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles and improved firmness, as well as boosted skincare absorption. The Province Apothecary Dual Action Jade Facial Roller ($44 CAD and $44 USD at well.ca; ships to USA) is different from most: it features a smooth roller on one end to reduce puffiness and tension, and a studded roller on the other to stimulate circulation and tone skin.
Available at well.ca, *Province Apothecary and *Shoppers Drug Mart.
chanel la palette caractère lipstick compact
You can never have too many stunning luxury lipstick options when it comes to selecting a thoughtful gift. If Mum likes lipstick, she'll love the Chanel La Palette Caractère lipstick compact ($90 CAD at holtrenfrew.com and $60 USD at chanel.com). Featuring five vivid shades in satin, velvet and matte finishes to wear on their own or to mix as desired, the palette was part of the last holiday collection; you might want to call your closest Chanel counter to find out if they have any in stock. (I hope my mum's not reading this post because I'm giving her the one in the opening photo for Mother's Day!)
Available at select Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutiques and Holt Renfrew; check local department stores.
sangre de fruta nº1 rose body cream
"The scent of morning-fresh rose petals" – that's how Sangre de Fruta Nº1 Rose Body Cream ($67 CAD and $48 USD at goop.com) is described on the brand's website, and it's not wrong. The luscious natural formula has a divine whipped texture and is made with organic shea butter, as well as grape seed, olive, coconut, rose-hip and rose damascena flower oils. (If you'd like to know more, our lovely beauty-director friend Lesa Hannah wrote about Sangre de Fruta here.) Other scents include Neroli Forever, Lavender by the Sea, Vetiver & Fleur and more that sound wonderful.
This is the option that's a little tricky to snag quickly – best add it to your Pinterest board of future gift ideas because it's lovely for anyone who'd enjoy a "dreamy, buttery beauty confection" (Lesa's description, and I'm in agreement; I purchased the jar in the opening photo).
