April showers bring May flowers, but in the meantime this grey weather is chilling me to the bone. I need someone to walk with me at all times, carrying a thermos of hot tea.
This sleek Stelton Collar thermos, specifically. Isn’t it cool? $105 CAD and $79 USD at themodernshop.com.
Even though April can be rainy and cold, I still pull my white jeans out of hibernation (hoping they'll fit after a long winter), I wear a light spring jacket like the willful idiot I am, and then am surprised when I freeze (ergo, the thermos of tea). And for a final, self-defeating touch, I forgo boots and just wear shoes with no socks (So chic! So stupid!) but at least I self-tan my lower legs (thank you, Clarins Radiance Plus Golden Glow Booster drops ($32 CAD/USD at sephora.com) that I mix with my body lotion) to hide the paper whiteness of my ankles. (Are my priorities skewed?)
But no matter the weather, or my utter inability to dress properly for it, at least I can have a new Spring fragrance to wear with my white jeans.
narciso rodriguez for her pure musc
Narciso Rodriguez for Her Pure Musc eau de parfum is part of an unnaturally long run of really good flankers – spin-offs – from 2003’s Narciso Rodriguez for Her. The newest, Pure Musc is a striking mix of clean laundry musk and a profusion of white flowers, all bound together with Cashmeran, a woody, ambery musk note with a hint of powder. Together they give you a full court press of musk that’s definitely different from all the other musks out there.
And can we please discuss this bottle? I would like to design an entire house around it – only allowing things in that meet the taste level of this bottle. That’s not crazy, right?
gucci guilty eau de parfum
Gucci Guilty Pour Femme Eau de Parfum’s list of notes reads like a bonkers mix of diverse flowers – perfectly in keeping with Gucci designer Alessandro Michele’s predilection for putting a giant crystal tiger head on a sedate handbag, or lining traditional Gucci loafers in curling, luxurious sheepskin. The fragrance opens with mandora, a cross between a mandarin and an orange, as well as bergamot and pink peppercorns. Okay, cool cool, so you think you know where it’s going – but then there’s this crazy overloaded heart of lilac, rose, geranium and violet all undergirded with two kinds of patchouli plus amber. This new iteration of Gucci Guilty is a powdery and refined feminine fragrance that smells very expensive, but there’s that raw, modern, new Gucci edge. And the whole thing works.
$114 CAD and $92 USD at thebay.com, *Shoppers Drug Mart, sephora.com, and Nordstrom.
calvin klein women eau de toilette
Calvin Klein Women Eau de Toilette is a Calvin Klein minimalist bias cut silk dress in liquid form. It’s equal measures optimism and strength, opening with brightness and fruit from lemon, raspberry, black currant and pink peppercorns before yielding to creamy peonies, orange flower petals and rose. A defined background of woods and ambers keeps the whole endeavor from drowning in too many flowers. It’s the kind of floral you could wear with a suit (some of us still have to wear suits) and still telegraph your kick-a** competence. Talk about duality. This eau de toilette has it in spades.
givenchy gentleman cologne
“Shared fragrance” is a more alluring expression than the sterile “unisex.” And even though it's labeled a men’s fragrance (and the bottle is that square flat kind usually designed for men), I consider Givenchy Gentleman Cologne, with its herbal soapiness and lightness, something that I would steal. I mean wear. It’s both calming and gently uplifting courtesy of iris (which smells like violet) as well as rosemary, lemon and vetiver. So if you lean towards crisper scents, a propensity that has you scouting the men’s side at Sephora, then you should give this a go. Our Janine, for example, is a devoted Terre D’Hermès wearer and that allegedly masculine fragrance suits her perfectly.
clean reserve solar bloom eau de parfum
Vetiver is intoxicating, almost smoky in its sticky intensity. But it can sometimes be too dark for summer, almost molasses-rich. This Clean Reserve eau de parfum is how you brighten the notes for the sunny months ahead. Solar Bloom spikes darkish vetiver with bergamot for a citrusy, light-filled scent that clings (I mean that in the best way possible) without fading like so many citrus scents. Plus (and here’s the added genius bit) it tempers all that vetiver darkness with green mandarin to reveal and enhance its bright green side. On a sunny day, it’s all transparency and light; on a grey, drizzly day, it'll warm you. It too is sold as a "shared" fragrance, so try it on your nearest available male person as well.
