The Lipstick League wants to know about mascara. Specifically, what does your ideal mascara do, and is there one that comes close to delivering it?
My question is this: does your ideal mascara exist?
And my answer is: yes, yes it does. A few times.
I still tell people I have only 7 eyelashes, 3 on one side, 4 on the other. And they're wee, fragile, barely there anyway. So I need mascara that:
- has a brush that won't bully my poor little lashes (i.e. smush them together into thorns – two on one eye and one on the other)
- won't weigh my lashes down
- won't transfer onto my lids or under my eyes
- won't flake
- won't clump
- when new, won't take more than a couple of uses to deliver better volume and length (you know how some mascaras are just too runny when they're first opened? most thicken up once air gets into the tube, and then deliver better results)
- adds lots of volume and length without too much effort (because I don't have time to keep applying coats in the back of an Uber)
I know the last one looks like it just won't happen with all the requirements before it, but it totally can and does with my favourites.
For the longest while, my go-to has been Maybelline Lash Sensational Full Fan Effect. It meets all my criteria. In fact I was super sulky a couple of weeks ago when a mysterious case of conjunctivitis meant I had to throw away a new Full Fan Effect I'd just purchased and had only used twice – waaaah!
Other favourites include L'Oreal Paris Voluminous Butterfly mascara, CoverGirl LashBlast and LashBlastFusion, Lancôme Grandiôse (now that I'm familiar with the brush, I need to do a new video with a less new Grandiôse!), and Chanel Le Volume.
