But we’re not here to talk about the new OPI bottle ink, right? We’re here for swatches!
love opi xoxo collection swatches & review
OPI Snow Glad I Met You – Love OPI XOXO Holiday 2017 (above). That’s two coats (nope, the streaks don’t dry all the way down), and I have no idea why, but this thingy was haaaard to shoot colour correct. It’s actually wickedly reflective and bounces whatever colour light hits it right back into the camera lens. Here it’s early morning on a sunny day, so I may or may not be leaning a little orangey. It happens *shrug*.
OPI The Color That Keeps on Giving – Love OPI XOXO Holiday 2017 (above). Again, 2 coats of a fairly sheer pink confection that has tiny pink flecky bits in it. It’s very shimmery soft, very pretty, and goes on splendidly.
OPI My Wish List Is You – Love OPI XOXO Holiday 2017 (above). I’m not a fan of this thin jelly-ish poppy orange that I’m too lazy to build up to 3 coats. That’s 2 and I still see slight visible nail lines. Truth? As a swatcher, shades like these scare the crap out of me; I’m terrified of stained cuticles so if it takes more than 2 coats, I ain’t doin’ it.
OPI Adam Said “It’s New Year’s, Eve” – Love OPI XOXO Holiday 2017 (above). Judging from the clunky name of this, I’m guessing it’s an apple red. And it’s a red you can OCW if you’re running out the door. You’ll get better saturation if you do 2 coats though; that’s what I did here.
OPI Thrills in Beverly Hills Glitter Top Coat over Adam Said Blah Blah Blah (above). For a dash of festivus, I whipped out my 2005 OPI Thrills in Beverly Hills Top Coat. I know, right? Mega holiday!
OPI Sending You Holiday Hugs – Love OPI XOXO Holiday 2017 (above). That right there is a stupendous formula in 2 coats. There’s a whack of blue jammed into this red and there’s also a whole lot of coppery inner-shimmer that makes this red almost glowy.
OPI Feel the Chemis-tree – Love OPI XOXO Holiday 2017 (above). 2 coats. I can’t even. Look at it! Oh, OPI, you’re crushin’ it with this deep-set shimmer! It’s beautiful and radiant and I’m a fan.
OPI Feel The Chemis-tree (above). Yeah, once more just because I loves it. Also, the formula! So easy!
OPI Wanna Wrap? – Love OPI XOXO Holiday 2017 (above). That’s 2 coats with a crazy plasticized high shine finish. You definitely don’t want to rush this paint job or you’ll drag so be gentle and kind, yes? It’s so dark that at first glance, it could be oxblood or deep dark brown or blackened maroon (which is what it is), but not black. And there’s zero top on there.
OPI Holidazed Over You – Love OPI XOXO Holiday 2017 (above). Hey! I thought it was black and it turns out it ain’t! The first coat is 100% inky blue. The second coat gets you to blackened inky blue. I did a fun thing though, I showed it to Nick! He said “Ppft. It’s black.”
OPI Midnight Blue Glitter over Holidazed Over You (above). Aw yeah! That’s a single coat of my 2004 knock-you-on-your-ass skinny brushy, stinky BLOPI Midnight Blue Glitter over my 2 coats of inky blue Holidazed and it’s freakin’ awesome! This layering of old and new just makes me smile like a dork.
OPI Midnight Blue Glitter over Holidazed Over You (above). Yes, I’m making you look at it again just because…
OPI Coalmates – Love OPI XOXO Holiday 2017 (above). Ta da! Similar, yes. But not the same. What you’re lookin’ at here is 2 coats of Coalmates and the formula is fab! She’s kind of almost foily and we all know how much I love a foil! Here, let me show you what it looks like…
OPI Coalmates (above). With top coat and a side of grass you get to see all the little life-giving flecks that are in there. It looks like there’s even a tiny sprinkling of holofetti too.
OPI Top The Package With a Beau – Love OPI XOXO Holiday 2017 (above). My first glance at the bottle made me think this would be somehow more than it was. Don’t get me wrong, I still like it. In the bottle though, you can see what looks like multi-shift flakies but once you slap it down, the muddy-ness of the base (which appeals to me) kind of overpowers the flakes and you end up with mostly goldy flakies peeking through. It’s very holiday, and very “black tie-ish” too - reminds me of a tuxedo. Is that weird?
OPI Gift of Gold Never Gets Old – Love OPI XOXO Holiday 2017 (above). That’s 3 thin coats and them streaks don’t dry all the way down. I’m not sure I love it just because of that. It’s almost like it wants to be a satin chrome, but falls a tiny bit short. Also, it might just be my lighting, but I couldn’t shoot it so it didn’t pull green-y. Ah, the joys of natural light…
OPI Gift of Gold Never Gets Old (above). Yes, I filed ‘em down and tried again. Every once in a while I realize my nails have grown when I wasn’t lookin’. To me, the right shape (and length) can make the difference in whether or not a polish photographs optimally or just looks wrong.wrong.wrong on mah hands. Better shorter, or longer? Huh?
OPI Ornament To Be Together – Love OPI XOXO Holiday 2017 (above). Huzzah! My least favourite shade of the 12! That’s 3 coats and it’s kind of a silvery foil where they forgot to put about 1/3 of the foil. It’s also got tiny scattered holo bits in it and even in bright sunlight, you’ll have to look really, really hard to find them. It feels like OPI is trying to cross over into the indie world where holo sprinkles and foils are common. Lukewarm effort, OPI. Let’s hope we see better from the stuff that’s coming out in the new year, yes?
OPI Ornament To Be Together (above). Ta da! Holo sprinklies that you can maybe almost see in the bottle and totally not on the nail! Hmmm… what if I…
OPI DS Shimmer over Ornament To Be Together (above). Yes. I’ll just add some old school OPI holo from the days where OPI didn’t mess around and went all in.
OPI Paris Couture For Sure over Ornament To Be Together (above). Or, I could use this top coat! It’s more of a scattered deal but even indoors it hints at more rainbows than Ornament does all by itself.
And that’s it! Now let’s talk about how this collection strikes us! Or, let’s talk about if certain shades are doin’ it for us. Or, let’s talk about the 28-second mark of this NailPro IG video (that you may or may not be able to see b/c it was a disappearing IG story) that gives us a brief glimpse of something called the OPI Mixed Metal Collection launching March 2018. I do know there's already a powder holo pigment called OPI Mixed Metals in the Chrome Effect line but I'm crossing all my fingers that OPI heads back into linear holographic regular polish territory and gives us amazeballz things like the old Designer Series shades.
K. Let’s talk now because I’m tired of writing this all by myself with no input from any of you. Ya’ll know the chatting is the most funnest part for me, right? Let's chat!
Linky Things: Where’d I buy mine? SparkleCanada.com! He’s my 🇨🇦 fave for all the OPI things! Where else can you get ‘em? They'll be available soon from Amazon.ca, amazon.com, ulta.com, and prolly a whole bunch of other online places that I’m too lazy to source for you. More info? Visit opi.com.
