Let me gush: I love the new Charlotte Tilbury Unisex Healthy Glow tinted moisturizer. I geek out when I see it on other people (Elle Canada beauty editor Katherine Flemming knows this because I went on and on and on about her insanely glowing complexion when I last saw her; she gave credit to Unisex Healthy Glow). And I like it so much on my own skin that I'll be making more of an effort to wear it every day as summer fades to Fall.
One of the latest encapsulated-pigment formulas on the market – some of you may remember when Almay was all about their "Smart Shade" encapsulated pigments in their tubes of sheer foundation and blush – the Charlotte Tilbury Unisex Healthy Glow lotion appears white-ish until you begin to blend it out. As the pigments meld with the base, a soft, rose-gold hue appears.
Here, have a look at the Instagram slide-show I posted a little bit ago (note: looks better on an iPhone or smartphone screen):
See? I've done my brows and my lashes for both sets, but other than that my skin is bare in the first shot, and clad only in Unisex Healthy Glow in the second. No concealer, no powder, no bronzer, no blush. In other news: #holycrapmyfaceishuuuge!
That the Tilbury pigment is rose-gold is smart – no Oompaloompa-orange here. And the skin-conditioning components in the moisturizer deliver a lovely smooth, hydrated and lightweight, sun-blessed finish.
Applied lightly over self-tanned skin, Charlotte Tilbury Unisex Healthy Glow ($65 CAD and $55 USD at charlottetilbury.com) would make the complexion look flawless, without the need for much else. I think I could get away with the barest contouring and highlighting, and the tiniest bit of concealer. And you should see how it looks on @kflemming (she does great Insta-stories from her office at Elle Canada, btw). Oh, wait:
Isn't that the best photo? I'm pretty sure Flemming's wearing CTilbury's Healthy Glow here. I should check... and yes, confirmed!
Anyway, also smart is the lack of SPF, at least where my prone-to-sensitivity skin is concerned. When my complexion is dehydrated, chemical UV filters sting, sometimes burn. I like that I can choose to apply a mineral sunscreen under Unisex Healthy Glow if I'm heading out during the day.
For major summer-goddess glow, I'd want to use the Charlotte Tilbury Instant Beauty Glow Palette.
One more thing: if you're sensitive to bismuth oxychloride, this formula isn't for you, I'm sorry :-(
Another more thing: Charlotte Tilbury is cruelty-free.
charlotte tilbury unisex healthy glow vs garnier skinactive nude effect bb cream
If you're looking for a drugstore version of a sheer, glow-boosting encapsulated-pigment moisturizer, look to Garnier SkinActive Nude Effect BB Light (aka Garnier SkinActive Nude Effect Self-Adjusting BB Cream). It won't give you the rose-gold, sunwashed finish of Healthy Glow, but it will enhance decent complexions (very little coverage, so the better your skin, the better it'll look wearing this formula).
Cleverly, the pigment has a champagne gold tint, which means that instead of bronzing, it'll brighten even quite pale complexions and blend nicely over medium-deep skintones, too, without ashiness. Hence the "universal shade" classification on the tube.
The Garnier SkinActive Nude Effect BB ($19.99 CAD at londondrugs.com) contains chemical UV filters (ethylhexyl salicylate and octocrylene) that goes with the SPF 15 rating on the Australian packaging. That's convenient if your complexion can handle 'em. (Not long after I'd applied the Garnier, my skin, sensitized at the time, started a long, low-grade scream. Oops. I'll try it again on a better-skin day, though!)
Note: neither of these self-adjusting tinted moisturizers is silicone-free.
Darnit, this was supposed to have been a short post, and then I couldn't help adding the Garnier bit. Erk. Would you have preferred to read about the Garnier Nude Effect BB in a separate post, also short?
And what are your thoughts on the products? Is either of them something you'd use?
