Greetings to you, fellow nail polish junkies! Today, I’m going to put Great Lakes Lacquer right smack on your radar because it really, really needs to be on your radar. How’d it get on mine? Uh, Indie Expo Canada 2017 – that’s how.
Great Lakes Lacquer Lake Huron (above). With the natural light that comes in from the huge bank of windows in front of me, she’s this. A jelly-like blue that has a turquoise shimmer lurking in it.
Great Lakes Lacquer Lake Huron (above). And on a bed of salad, you can see that shimmer where the light hits it just right.
Great Lakes Lacquer Lake Huron with a side of grass (above). Then with a whole bunch of light, look at it! Just look at it! It’s like sunshine reflecting off the surface of a vast body of water. It’s perfect.
The brilliance that is Great Lakes Lacquer is hand-crafted in Michigan, by force-of-nature Mariah. This woman was born to create colours that resonate; she does it so remarkably well. She’s just celebrated the two year anniversary of her shop and every single small batch and sample she had for her anniversary sale, sold out. Completely. Fast. Gone. Poof.
Great Lakes Lacquer The Jewel of Ontario (above). If you’re following @manigeek or @imabeautygeek on the Instagram, you saw this image of my rarely-seen-in-the-wild right hand and you probably gasped aloud and said something like “Gimme dat polish!”. If you didn’t say that, there might be something wrong with you. Just sayin’. I mean look at that perfect sparkling holo turquoise shifter! I love this bottle so hard.
Sadly, you can’t get it (sucka!) because it was a limited edition polish created exclusively for Indie Expo Canada.
Great Lakes Lacquer Don’t Forget the Whip (above). Unnhhh. Now that's how to make a neutral! You’re thinking “Manigeek, you’re off your nut. That’s not neutral”. Oh yes it is. And it’s stunning. With everything that’s happening in that bottle, it somehow ends up translating as simple and oddly sophisticated. I don’t even know how she did this. It’s a marvel.
Great Lakes Lacquer Don’t Forget the Whip (above). With a little tilt of the hand, what shows up? Multi-shift flakies. Seriously genius.
Great Lakes Lacquer Coffee is Necessary (above). Pretty sure just the name alone wins all the things for me, but wait... This polish! Gah!! I’ve used polishes like these before and always wished the maker could find a way to make the flakies float in it (and on top of it) without successive coats making it look muddy. Mariah is the first to succeed. I didn’t have to look around for undies and I only needed 2 coats. How? Like, just how?
Great Lakes Lacquer All The Beautiful People (above). I advise you not to fall for this copper-shimmered shade of beauty. Why? Because again, you can’t get it. I got it at Indie Expo. It’s an exclusive. It’s mines.
Some of you are already familiar with the brand so you already know what an absolute joy the formulas are. You already know how incredible the depth of colour created is. You’ve seen the amazing things she’s stuffed into some of these bottles. You already know the brush does much of the work for you. And you already know that somehow, there’s magic in these polishes. There’s actually feeling in there – emotion, even. I dunno. I can’t explain it. They resonate. That’s the only word I know that fits.
Great Lakes Lacquer Love at Hyatt Regency (above). Then there’s this sneaky unassuming almost dusty blurple-y cornflower blue. It looks like such a simple shade, but it sure ain’t.
Great Lakes Lacquer Love at Hyatt Regency (above). With a side of salad, stealth shimmer arises! And it’s so subtle and understated that it’s like a little secret. Oh. I’m sad for you... It’s another limited edition VIP IEC polish. Sorry!
Great Lakes Lacquer In a Handful of Dust (above). OMSqeeeeee!!! You ran that shift with me, right? Did you? Start with the pinky and go up! OMSqueeeeeee!
Great Lakes Lacquer In a Handful of Dust (above). Again! Again! More!!
Great Lakes Lacquer In a Handful of Dust (above). I can't. I don't have words.
Great Lakes Lacquer In a Handful of Dust (above). And then I HAD to message Mariah and ask her what the hell kind of magician she is, because really – who makes something like this and isn’t a magician? #TrueStory.
Great Lakes Lacquer In a Handful of Dust (above). Over a bed of salad and whuuuuuut? Oh yes. That. Here’s your direct link. It’s gonna run you a mere $11USD (+ ship) and you’d better hurry. While you’re there, might as well just chuck the whole Polishing Poetic Collection in your cart. It would be a shame not to.
Great Lakes Lacquer In a Handful of Dust (above). If I shoot from further away, this shift shows up. My mind is boggled.
And for those non-believers (no, not you) who think I have a fancy studio and set up all my shots then Photoshop the crap out of ‘em, please enjoy this un-cropped, un-altered shot of the above photo that shows you the entirety of my crazy-fancy studio (below).
That's the exact same picture before I cropped it; no photography lamps, no light box, no Photoshop, no nuthin. Just my desk, daytime, a bottle of polish in my left hand, and my iPhone in my right. Ignore the little coffee stain on my super-expensive, highly mobile, plain white printer paper backdrop, k? You can’t even see it once I execute my mighty crop.
It’s not too often I consider spending next month’s mortgage payment on nail polish, but I gotta tell you that if I had just a tiny bit less self-control… yeah. I’m not kidding.
Oh hey! Here's a fun thing: Mariah is one of the coordinators of Polish Con (tickets go on sale August 7th, I think). Just knowing she’s going to have tonnes of polish in Chicago on September 23rd, 2017 has me looking at hotel prices. Again, not kidding.
What’s in these bottles astounds me. How often do I get astounded? Almost never. It does happen though and when it does, I need to make sure all ya’ll know about it. Now go find that wallet you hid from yourself (sorry, I was trying to help, but it's time to let you make your own decisions) and get to shoppin’! You can thank me by showing me your pretties on the IG when you get ‘em but you'll want to be aware that as Great Lakes Lacquer is a one-woman show, it takes time for these to reach your doorstep. Here's the shipping and turnaround time stuffs. Happy Great Lakes-ing everybody!!
