I know, I know, I’m late with this. But hey! Better late than never! And now, because you’ve been so patient, your swatches of the OPI California Dreaming Collection! Yay!!!
Before we begin, I don’t know if it’s important to you or not, but I bought this collection from my favourite Canadian supplier SparkleCanada.com. My bud over there always stocks the latest mainstream releases, and ships them out to me super-fast. His prices are pretty nice too!
opi california dreaming collection swatches & review
OPI Feeling Frisco – OPI California Dreaming 2017 (above). I got this to go on like buttah!! I totally did! That’s 2 easy-peasy coats + top coat. But wait… Brand new and straight out of the bottle, it wasn’t buttah. I had to make buttah by adding 4 drops of thinner, shaking in my ProShaker, and waiting 24 hours before trying again.
OPI Excuse Me, Big Sur – OPI California Dreaming 2017 (above). That’s a pretty, dusty-rose neutral, huh? And it’s only 2 coats to get you to this.
OPI Barking Up The Wrong Sequoia – OPI California Dreaming 2017 (above). Again, that’s 2 easy coats (if you count the thinner, the shaking, and the 24 hour wait time). With my style of polishin’, I found the lighter shades in this collection tricky to work. A couple drops of thinner really helps. Yes, it’s painful to thin brand new bottles of polish but you know what? It helps. Massively. Especially if you do thin coats like I do.
OPI Time For A Napa – OPI California Dreaming 2017 (above). Phew! I found me a good formula! It’s a little bit jelly-crème, but in 2 easy coats it goes on perfectly and ends with a beautiful bright shine. I likes. A lot.
OPI Malibu Pier Pressure – OPI California Dreaming 2017 (above). If you look real close down the sidewalls, you may or may not be able to see slight streaks. Weirdly, my brush was almost imperceptibly uneven. If you slap on a good shiny top coat, the little tiny streaks will totally disappear and then your paint job will make you smile really big.
OPI Santa Monica Beach Peach – OPI California Dreaming 2017 (above). Peach? I think not. Orange? Yes. But let’s talk formula. In a word, this is why I love OPI. Okay, that’s more than one word.. how ‘bout.. perfect? Yes. Perfect. Orange. 2 magical coats.
OPI Me, Myselfie & I – OPI California Dreaming 2017 (above). Why all the OPI formulas can’t be like this is beyond me. When they do it right, they SO do it right. Over the decades I’ve had my fingers in this brand, this is the kind of goodness I’ve come to expect. That’s 2 fantastically easy OPI coats. As it should be.
OPI To The Mouse House We Go! – OPI California Dreaming 2017 (above). That’s 2 coats of a bright poppy red jelly-crème. Yes, visible nail lines. No, I’m not doing 3 coats - that's OPI asking far too much of me.
OPI GPS I Love You – OPI California Dreaming 2017 (above). THIS formula. Yes!! It’s beauty. I have 2 coats on here but I tell ya what… If you were tearing out the door, you could probably get away with 1 generous coat. This.Is.OPI.
OPI This Is Not Whine Country – OPI California Dreaming 2017 (above). Unlike GPS I Love You, I did have to do 3 coats. This one is a little more sheer and needs to build but once it does, the saturation and shine just make me smile like a dork. Bluey berry shades… I’m a junkie for ‘em.
OPI Sweet Carmel Sunday – OPI California Dreaming 2017 (above). This one is kinda neat. That’s 2 coats with top coat. The streaks don’t dry all the way down, but that’s okay with me – I think they add interest. In bright light she shows as a beautiful white-bronze.
OPI Sweet Carmel Sunday – OPI California Dreaming 2017 (above). And in lower light (but still natural light b/c that’s how I roll), you get copper. Either way, she just screams OPI, right? Oh! For application of this one, to help minimize streaks, use quick, sure strokes, k?
OPI Don’t Take Yosemite For Granite – OPI California Dreaming 2017 (above). I’m a fan. Yep. I mean how could I not be, right? That’s 2 coats of this magnificent almost lilac-charcoal-brown and if you slap on a coat of top, it just comes to life. There’s teeny tiny pink micro-shimmer in there and that’s what gives it so much lift. If there was only 1 shade I could get from this collection, Don’t Take Yosemite For Granite would be it.
So there you go, fellow nail nerds! Your long-awaited swatches of California Dreaming 2017! If you’re new to the world of polish, and are building a solid Archive, then there are a handful of shades in here that are worth looking at. The formulas are spotty though and I found the lighter the shade, the more problematic it was to apply. A bottle of thinner can really help.
As a collector and archivist of OPI polish, I gotta say this California Snoozefest collection strikes me as so supremely uninspired (and riddled with formula issues) that I’ve decided to pretend it doesn’t even exist.
Instead, I’m going to look forward to the OPI Iceland Fall/Winter 2017 Collection (above & below) and pin lotsa hope on that.
