Audrey Hepburn's pretty nails are NOT a French manicure. Let's kill the tacky, high-contrast French mani forever, please. Wait, what was the question again?
Hoo boy, this week's Lipstick League question is a good one; I can't wait to read what you'll say in response to What beauty fad or trend do you want to come back into fashion? (I will judge you if you say "banana clips.")
My first answer is let's make it so the tacky, stark-white-tip French manicure never existed. See Audrey's nails up there? Perfection. They look natural and clean and polished, not screamingly artificial.
That's answering the question, isn't it?
Okay, fine: I think the real answer is related to where you look for trends.
If I were to look at Instagram, I'd say more natural brows, more natural makeup – and a more natural French tip, please. Instagram makeup (aka makeup-addict makeup) is so artificial, mask-like and over-the-top it disturbs me. (Makeup-artist pal Lucky Bromhead has a point with the above post.)
If I were to look to the runways – NY Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week, Milan Fashion Week, London Fashion Week – honestly there's nothing I need to see come back because at some point, everything does. Modern makeup is about taking inspiration from wherever you like, whether it's past eras or runways or even Instagram, and choosing what works for your features, your wallet and your lifestyle.
Ooh! I spotted this on my makeup-artist friend Diana Carreiro's Instagram feed: blue liner on the waterline – remember that? That was a big trend when I was young. Early 80s, I think. I love it again. (Also: I'm all #browenvy over those brows, and #skinenvy over that skin, too.)
