TRUTH ABOUT THAT VIOLET LIP GIGI HADID WORE

Last Fall, at a private Maybelline shindig for New York Fashion Week, Gigi Hadid caused a sensation in this vivid violet-magenta lip: Maybelline Color Jolt Intense Lip Paint in Violet Rebel. But at the time Color Jolt information was under strict embargo, so makeup artist Grace Lee instead told the media how they could re-create the shade using two existing lipsticks.
Fast-forward six months, and the Maybelline Color Jolt Intense Lip Paints are set for release this July. So, in the short video tutorial below, we can see Color Jolt in action as Grace demonstrates a full-face look with Violet Rebel and just two other products, also new releases from Maybelline.

"It's pure pigment in a little bottle," exclaims Grace Lee. We're backstage at Toronto Fashion Week, just a few days ago. (Grace is the Maybelline New York Canada Lead Artist, if you recall.) She's geeking out about the new Maybelline Color Jolt Intense Lip Paint I mentioned at the top of this post. Super-pigmented colour with a pretty shine, Color Jolt comes in the shades you see in the above image; the colour Gigi Hadid wore is 40 Violet Rebel, the tube at the top. It's one of just three products Grace uses to create a complete look in the video below.
maybelline master strobing stick
The first item Grace uses to create a three-product face on model Sadie is the new Maybelline Master Strobing Stick, a silky-smooth formula with a fine shimmer and soft pinkish undertone that together read as a gorgeous sheen on skin. (With the addition of Master Strobing Stick to the Maybelline line-up, Grace no longer needs to use the clear Baby Lips Lip Balm as a highlighter. It's still a great option, though, for someone who can't deal with shimmer at all.)
maybelline colossal spider effect mascara
The second item Grace uses to create her finished look on Sadie is the new Maybelline Colossal Spider Effect Volum' Express Mascara launching this June. Its unusual brush features bristles on one side, and is designed to deliver a generous amount of mascara for instant mega-drama. (For a more feathery effect, scrape some of the mascara off the brush when you remove it from the tube.)
And of course Maybelline Color Jolt Intense Lip Paint in Violet Rebel is the third and final addition to complete Sadie's makeup. Have a look at the video:
The three-product how-to recap:
- With a blending brush, sweep Maybelline Master Contour Stick onto eyelids, into inner corners and onto the brow bone.
- With your fingers, press Maybelline Master Contour Stick onto the tops of cheebones and up toward the hairline, and dab a bit on the bridge of the nose.
- Next, apply new Maybelline Colossal Spider Effect Mascara. Be careful – it deposits a generous amount of mascara with the first application. This isn't a mascara for the faint-hearted.
- With a lip brush, paint mouth with Maybelline Color Jolt in Violet Rebel, the shade Grace used on Gigi. Think of it as a full-coverage, lightweight lip cream with a gloss-like gleam.
In an Instagram age where the makeup message seems to be about putting on as many products as possible, it's refreshing to see a pro makeup artist use just three little items to create a bright, youthful look.
Granted it helps that Sadie has perfect, bouncy young skin, naturally full brows and gorgeous bright eyes. I would certainly need foundation, concealer and brows in addition to what Grace used, plus tightlining along the upper lash line.
And if you've got a tween or teen, this is a look she could certainly carry off. Cream highlighter stick as eyeshadow? Perfect! Strobing on cheekbones without blush and contour? Perfect! Vibrant violet lips? Well, that's your call as a mom. Go for a sheer lip gloss if that bold Violet Rebel gives you pause.
Oh, and if you missed the hotlink up there to Grace's Insta-list of makeup used on Gigi, while Color Jolt was under embargo, she instead recommended mixing Maybelline ColorSensational Vivid Lipstick in Brazen Berry + Fuchsia Flash. Later she updated with Maybelline ColorSensational Creamy Mattes Lipstick in Vibrant Violet as a no-blend option.
In the video, Grace also mentioned a new lipstick version of Violet Rebel. I didn't get a chance to follow up with her on the name; perhaps it's Violet Vixen from the new Maybelline ColorSensational Loaded Bolds collection?
Thoughts? I know you have 'em!
