This week the Lipstick League wants to know: what was your first signature scent? And do you still wear it?
When I began to buy fragrance, I bought one at a time and wore each bottle exclusively until I used it up – Elizabeth Arden Blue Grass (my Mum told me she wore it when she was young, so it's where I started at 16 or so), Prescriptives Calyx, Calvin Klein Escape. It wasn't until my mid-20s when I found Issey Miyake L'Eau d'Issey that I felt I had a signature scent. Fresh, airy, clean and aquatic, L'Eau d'Issey just fit. Finally. That was the first perfume that I bought again and again when I ran out of my first bottle.
I haven't worn L'Eau d'Issey in years. At some point in my early 30s, the scent just wasn't as satisfying as it had been. I still liked it – I still do – but my style editor gig at Canadian Living Magazine introduced me to so many new perfume profiles, new notes.... Those years are a fragrance blur. All I knew was that most perfumes, even the few I loved, did not work with my persnickety body chemistry. It took me a long time to sort through all those to find my new signature.
My signature scent now is a wardrobe of men's fragrances, characterized by crisp bergamot, vetiver, and incense. It started with Hermès Terre d'Hermès, a bottle I acquired at Canadian Living and began wearing only a couple of years ago. I'll tell you more in another post one day.
