On the Met Ball 2015 red carpet last night, Rihanna stopped time in her lavish, golden yellow fur-trimmed cape by Chinese haute-couture designer Guo Pei. Is it a coincidence that in Chinese culture, red and gold symbolize good luck, fortune and joy? Perhaps not for Guo Pei, whose name is on almost every fashion- and beauty-industry lips today. As well as her Met Ball coup (she also has two creations on display at the Met), her MAC Guo Pei Collection was just announced for Fall 2015. Let's look at some photos.

This year's Met Ball theme was "China: Through the Looking Glass." Rihanna was one of only a handful of attendees who wore something by a Chinese designer. (I would totally wear that. Capes are so forgiving.)
Fun fact: Rihanna uses her Google button to do Internet research just like you and I do. Except when her online search leads her to a magnificent, hand-made, couture cape with a miles-long train, she can get the designer to let her wear it for a red-carpet gala.
Although new to many people this week, designer Guo Pei is in no way an unknown in the fashion world. Not with fantastical designs like these. She's been likened to Alexander McQueen for her beautifully hand-constructed and hand-embellished collections. (Rihanna's cape took one woman two years to complete.) Lady Gaga has also worn her creations (the word "clothes" seems so mundane for Guo Pei's art), as have Chinese stars such as Li Bingbing and Zhang Ziyi.
Carmen dell'Orefice walked the runway for Guo Pei; the legendary model, then 79 (she's 83 now), had four men on stage with her to help with her costume's weighty train.

Another fun fact: Guo Pei designed six couture dresses as inspiration for the MAC Guo Pei collection, which took three years to develop. The line will consist of 16 items, including eyeshadows, eyeliner, blush, powder, lipstick and gloss. The stunning packaging features an exotic floral print in gold and yellow, and echoes the overall makeup colour palette of coral, pink and blue. "Blue is a colour of the soul," says Guo Pei in an interview with The Cut. "It’s also the base color of the universe and our world. I chose pink and coral for the lip colors because I think they are colors of happiness. I want to affect the people around me with happiness.
The MAC Guo Pei collection of makeup will be available at MAC counters and online in October 2015.
