Australian model Andreja Pejic is a new face of Make Up For Ever. She's the first transgender model to achieve such a career milestone with a well-known cosmetics company. Vogue revealed the news in their May 2015 issue -- Andreja, of course, also breaks new ground as the subject of a feature story and shoot in American Vogue.
“Being known to the whole world with this transition, I thought, Who is ever going to love me? How am I going to have a relationship with a man if all of this is public? Then I got to a place where I was like, ‘I’m successful and happy with what I’ve achieved. There’s nothing I should be ashamed of. You can take it or leave it.’ ” -- Andreja Pejic
We -- Beautygeeks -- first met Andreja in 2011 at what was then LG Fashion Week in Toronto. Still known as Andrej, the Croation/Serbian model from Melbourne was opening the runway show for designer Arthur Mendonça, and shooting the cover of the February 2012 issue of Fashion Magazine. She'd already appeared in a campaign for Marc Jacobs, walked the runway for Jean Paul Gaultier, and been voted 98th sexiest woman in the world by FHM.
Right this minute, Andreja's making some news as the first transgender model to represent a noted makeup brand, and will likely continue to achieve major "first transgender" milestones for years to come. We love that -- so much about the fashion industry is (or seems to be) exclusive rather than inclusive, yet some of its brightest moments are about acceptance. And although Andreja's blazing an incredible new trail, we hope that along the way fewer and fewer stories about her will need to mention "transgender" more than once, or at all.
