Blacked-Out Eyes: Black Liner, Black Liner, Black Liner + Black Glitter
"It's panda-chic," quipped Glow Magazine assistant beauty/fashion editor Mishal Cazmi, when Maybelline pro and World Mastercard Fashion Week Lead Artist Grace Lee admitted that yes, the makeup for the Vawk runway show last night looked panda-esque. Cranky Panda-Chic, really -- the blacked-out eyes, pale complexion and contoured cheeks looked incongruous when model Ishie smiled.
blacked-out eyes: black liner × 3 + black glitter
"The designer [Project Runway Canada Season 2 winner Sunny Fong] said 'my whole collection is black and I was inspired by the street pop scene of the Middle East,'" said Grace Lee, backstage last night on the opening evening of World MasterCard Fashion Week in Toronto. Of the runway look she said, "It's the darkest, blackest eye you've ever seen in your life." To get the inky effect, Grace layered three types of black eye liner plus a dab of black glitter on the lid. She did the eye makeup first, then foundation.
Grace started with Maybelline NY Color Show Crayon Khol Liner ($5.99 at drugstores) along lower and upper inner rims of eyes...
...and in a thick angled wedge on lids.
Next Grace layered Maybelline NY Eye Studio Master Smoky Longwearing Shadow-Pencil in Black Smoke ($9.49 at well.ca) over the Crayon Khol along lower lashlines, and used it to build up the colour on lids.
Grace applied Maybelline NY Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner in Blackest Black ($11.99 at well.ca) over the other two liners.
Before glitter, Grace brushed lashes with a quick coat of Maybelline NY Volum'Express Pumped Up Colossal Mascara (in stores in April) to prevent them from "disappearing" against the blackness of the eye makeup.
After first rubbing a fingertip over Maybelline NY Baby Lips Lip Balm in Quenched ($4.27 at well.ca), Grace dipped that same fingertip into black craft glitter then pressed it gently onto Ishie's lids. She swiped a small angled brush over the clear Baby Lips balm, then used it to pick up and press glitter along the lower lashlines.
Grace evened out Ishie's complexion with a Maybelline NY Fit Me Shine Free Foundation stick ($10.49 at well.ca), then contoured the cheekbones with Maybelline NY Color Tattoo Eyeshadow in Tough as Taupe ($8.99 at well.ca). "There's no orange in it, so gives a beautiful contour. You just have to make sure you blend it out really well."
A prep layer of Baby Lips in Quenched, plus a bit of foundation stick and Maybelline NY lipstick in Bare All ($9.99 at well.ca) completed makeup on Ishie. Grace left the brows bare so they wouldn't distract from the eye makeup.
Is there anything from this makeup application that you might try? Perfect work-day makeup, yes?
