Every time I slather Güd Orange Petalooza natural body lotion on my winter-parched skin it sighs in happiness and I think, must write about this. Plus at the Canadian launch I snapped this cute shot with Canadian songstress and Güd celebrity spokesperson Carly Rae Jepsen (crop out the side pony and I look like a boy next to Carly Rae's lush-lashed prettiness). And fun fact: we have a Carly Rae Jepsen Cinderella to look forward to.

A while back, I told you Carly Rae Jepsen had signed on for her first beauty contract as the face of Güd natural body and hair care. She grew up with Burts Bees; her mum used to put it in her stocking every Christmas. The campaign shots put the singer in the shower; here Güd Carly Rae Jepsen reveals she can do more than sing under the spray.
If you're not familiar, the Güd lineup of hair and body care is a playful, planet-friendly collection from the Burts Bees family. Natural except for the little bit of fragrance, it's a makes-sense alignment with the peppy pop-princess sound that characterizes Carly Rae Jepsen's tunes. Distinguished by uplifting scents and cheerful graphic packaging, Güd is about using good stuff that makes you feel good -- and for me, it's on the money.
The sunny Orange Petalooza Natural Body Wash ($8.29 at well.ca; also available at Target) is how I start my day in a good mood despite the too-often grey winter; Orange Petalooza Natural Body Lotion ($8.29 at well.ca; also available at Target), which contains shea butter, sunflower oil, antioxidant-rich rosehip and Vitamin E, helps keep my skin in a good mood. Even the Orange Petalooza packaging illustration makes me smile. (You can figure out which one it is, right?)
why güd smells good
Güd's scents were designed by a company called Givaudan, which also has Dior J'Adore, Calvin Klein Obsession, Prada Infusion d'Iris, and Marc Jacobs Lola on its extensive list of creations. "Güd is young, happy, fun, new and different, and very colourful, so we had to express that in the scent," explains Onno Stofberg, Givaudan Vice President and Executive Perfumer. The challenge was to come up with an accessible fragrance that doesn't overpower the user, or bore her either. Above: Orange Petalooza
"Each one of these fragrances in its own way has an element that's different that makes it a little bit unexpected and irreverent," says Stofberg. "For example, in Pearanormal Activity, we created a fragrance using this pear note, a fragrance with all the complexity of traditional layered fragrance design, then we gave it a very unexpected berry, which offsets the pear." Above: Floral Cherrynova
"In fragrance design, much like cooking, you want a contrasting note to bring out a particular flavour -- if it's single note, it becomes bland. People don't like bland in food, and they don't like bland in scent. The berry is one of those accent notes that perks up the signature note." Above: Pearanormal Activity

"It's natural, it smells fresh and youthful," says Carly Rae about Güd. "It's good for you and you feel good wearing it -- there's nothing not to love about it." The 28-year-old singer was in Toronto on a busy Monday just recently to meet and greet fans on behalf of Güd.
Right now Carly Rae is hard at work in New York City. She's in rehearsals for her February 4th debut as Cinderella in the Broadway production of Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella. Fran Drescher (remember The Nanny?) plays her evil stepmother! And yep, that's an official Carly Rae Jepsen Cinderella photo, which she tweeted yesterday. Güd for her! (I know; Staff made me do it. She's punny.)
The US has more Güd stuff than we do as you'll see at gudhappens.com (if you're US-based, G. at NouveauCheap gets into Mango Moonbreeze here). no guilt, no fear, all güd
I mentioned this to Jann in the comments below and decided to add it here: one of my favourite things about Güd is that it's a fun, cheerful, affordable natural line. It's not trying to guilt you into being more planet friendly, or scare you about "toxins" in the world. It's just hi! we're happy! have a güd day! I dig that.
Have you tried anything from Güd? Do you have a favourite?
