As I mentioned in yesterday's video tutorial post on how to shape and lift eyes with eye shadow, Guerlain makeup pro Maxime Poulin shared so many tips in five minutes that I had to pull his eye liner tips for a separate video to avoid beauty-information overload. So today, we learn how to Maxime-ize eye pencil! Here's Maxime Poulin again, and his model Tamara, to demonstrate how to shape, lift and intensify eyes with eye liner pencil.
No matter how well you do your makeup, or how involved your routine is, getting stuck in a rut happens. For example, all we ever see right now is winged liner this, and winged liner that (in fact, we have a winged liner how-to, too). Until Maxime's tips in this vid, I hadn't realized my own technique needed a shake-up.
You'll notice that Maxime uses a small, compact, rounded brush to smudge and blend liner and shadow and create shape. If you don't already have such a brush, try any of the following:
Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Shadow Blending Brush ($19, sephora.ca); Sephora Collection Pro Precision Smudge Brush ($22, sephora.ca); Make Up For Ever 202 Small Precision Smudger ($25, sephora.ca); Clinique Eye Contour Brush ($25, clinique.ca).
Note: If you use longwear, waterproof or smudge-resistant liners, such as those from Make Up For Ever, Urban Decay or Stila, you'll have to smudge as quickly after application as possible, before the liner sets. Consider using liners that don't promise long-wear benefits; smudging eye shadow on top will help them stay put anyway.
Oh, and the mascara Maxime uses in the video is Guerlain Maxi Lash ($32, sephora.ca).
And if you think this is the last you've seen our beauty-crush Maxime, it's not -- two more videos to come! The man is epic with his tips and tricks.
