60s Natural Makeup: No Winged Liner Required for Pink Tartan Spring 2014
The face at this week's Pink Tartan Spring 2014 fashion show was a nod to 1960s It Girl and Warhol muse Edie Sedgwick without the cat eye. Let's call it 60s natural makeup. Take note if you're not terribly practiced with that winged liner move. Follow the lead of Maybelline New York makeup pro Grace Lee, makeup-artist-in-charge at World Mastercard Fashion Week, and focus on bushy yet groomed brows and scads of mascara. Oh, and go all Beauty MacGyver with DIY highlighter, and use lip liner as blush.
Edie Sedgwick's brows provided the most inspiration for Pink Tartan's ’60s natural makeup. Grace and her team used Maybelline New York Define-A-Brow Eyebrow Pencils ($9.09, well.ca) to fill model brows in generously, then brushed them straight up with clear Maybelline New York Great Lash Mascara ($7.59, well.ca). "We want a natural looking, full, bushy, well-kept brow, not a painted on hockey-stick brow," she said.
On eyes, Grace applied Maybelline New York Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Liner in Blackest Black ($11.99, well.ca) along the upper lash lines, but stopped short of winging it out. She defined the crease with Maybelline New York ExpertWear Mono Eye Shadow in Nutmeg ($4.99, well.ca), and dabbed inner corners with her signature Beauty MacGyver DIY highlighter (see below). Lashings of Maybelline New York The Colossal Smoky Eyes Mascara in Very Black ($10.99, drugstores) on upper and lower eyelashes finished the 60s natural makeup on eyes.
A mixture of Maybelline New York Color Tattoo Eye Studio 24 Hr Cream Gel Shadow in Barely Branded ($9, drugstores) and colourless Maybelline New York Baby Lips Lip Balm in Quench ($4.49, well.ca), Grace's DIY highlighter added a dewy sheen to illuminate each model's cheekbones and the bridge of the nose.
But rather than blush, Grace pulled another Beauty MacGyver move and blended a neutral lip liner into cheeks for a natural flush. (Model: Grace/Plutino)
Try Maybelline New York Color Sensational Lip Liner in Nude ($8.09, well.ca) over well hydrated skin.
To finish the 60s natural makeup look, Grace used her fingertip to dab lips with Maybelline New York Color Elixir by Color Sensational liquid lip balm in Caramel Infused and Blush Essence ($10.99, drugstores in November). "I want the lips to look really moist, not super glossy," she said.
How's this for a ’60s-esque look to wear while you practice your winged liner technique on the sly? Love those brows. And what about those Beauty MacGyver moves for highlighter and blush?
