I’d say the Maybelline New York Color Show Vintage Leather collection of polishes is not for the novice painter. They’re tricky to use simply because they dry so extra-ordinarily quickly they don’t really get a chance to self-level. You need to work fast and you need to be extremely precise – I did both and still wasn’t able to get a clean line (or avoid streaks) with a couple of them.
The Maybelline Vintage Leather shades generally need to be applied leaving a small space at the base of the nail. To avoid the chipping that invariably happens with matte polishes, you’ll also need to use a base coat and cap the free edge. On top of that, I recommend using your favourite matte top to extend the life of your mani even further.
On the whole I quite like the textured matte finish of these Vintage Leather polishes – it’s interesting to look at. Yes, they’re a challenge to apply and need some finessing, but if you know going in that you need to spend an extra 30 seconds per nail, the results are totally worth it.
Ps. If you slap a regular top coat over your finished work, it takes the polish to a whole ’nuther dimension. Try it – you might dig it.
The Maybelline New York Color Show Vintage Leather nail polish collection ($3.99/bottle) is available at drugstores now.
