"Omigod your nails are amazing! Where do you go?" That's one of the most common compliment-questions (compli-queries?) I get. And the answer, since April 2010, is always Tips Nail Bar, at Danforth and Jones in Toronto.
Tips Nail Bar is enjoying its second day in fancy new digs. Highlights include expanded manicure and pedicure stations and a comfortable front waiting area. Statement light fixtures and black accents trimmed in white provide graphic contrast against a charming hand-painted canvas that stretches along the length of one wall.
Over the last several years, Tips has become a destination spot for manicure enthusiasts all over the city, and even as far as Vancouver, BC. Some clients can spot Tips work from 10 feet away: at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, post red-eye flight from Toronto, a fellow traveller in the baggage claim area brightened when she noticed my dot mani and immediately asked, "Do you go to Tips?" Her own Tips Nail Bar manicure was an adorable floral pattern copied from a New York Fashion Week runway show.
Owner and award-winning technician Leeanne Colley was for years the official spokesperson and nail expert for Revlon Canada (see Leeanne's editorial work here). Nail artist Melissa Forrest was the official spokesperson and expert for Sally Hansen Canada (see Melissa's editorial work here) and is now the official nail expert for Shoppers Drug Mart. At the time of this post's publication, the Tips team also comprises artists Miyuki Nakatomi, Naomi Misu, Oksana Fedio, Nargis Khan and Chantel Hinds. Tips esthetician Narges Ehsani, who gives the dreamiest facials, is also a longtime L'Oréal Paris makeup artist with years of experience at Fashion Week and TIFF.
Tips Nail Bar talent is regularly featured in Canada's top national beauty, fashion and lifestyle publications, including Fashion, Elle Canada, Flare, glow, Lou Lou, The Kit, Canadian Living, Chatelaine and Wedding Bells Canada. Tips artists also appear on popular Canadian lifestyle, entertainment and news programs to talk about trends. They execute media events on behalf of brands such as OPI, YSL Beauty, Lancôme, CoverGirl, Joe Fresh, Quo by Orly, and CND. They're the best at gel manicures using Gelish, Artistic Colour Gloss, Shellac, and more. And each season the Tips Nail Bar artists create custom manis backstage during Fashion Week. They're technically skilled, completely up on runway nail trends, and take the health of each client's nails very seriously.
Fun fact:Rita Remark, spokesperson and nail expert for Essie Canada, (see Rita's work here) is a beloved former member of the Tips Nail Bar team.
Aside from the talent, expertise and high profile of its artists, the true magic of Tips Nail Bar is the unmatched camaraderie of its crew and friendly loyal clientele of all ages. Compliments fly at the sight of a fabulous nail colour or clever design, delighted exclamations ring out when friends run into each other by chance, and newcomers often find themselves drawn into animated conversation with patrons beside them.
Tips Nail Bar's pretty new street-level space is just one door over from its previous location at 844 Danforth.
UPDATE: Tips now carries Dermalogica (Emma is their Dermalogica esthetician and she's amazing) and has just started offering micro-blading eyebrow enhancement.
Have you ever been to Tips Nail Bar? If yes, which artist do you see?
