How to apply self-tanner flawlessly – like a Victoria's Secret Angel

I met makeup artist and skin-finishing pro Christopher Ardoff last week at the media launch of Incredible by Victoria's Secret. This is a man known for making gorgeous Victoria's Secret models look like Victoria's Secret Angels, all golden-limbed goddesses. If anyone knows how to apply self-tanner flawlessly – no faux-woodgrain finish here – it's Christopher.

I'm sharing vacation-skin tips on The Marilyn Denis Show today, which streams live via at 10am, and will be available for anytime viewing by end of day. In the video below, though, are tips from Christopher Ardoff, who has worked with Sienna Miller, Emily Blunt, and Zooey Deschanel. And his top tip for how to apply self-tanner flawlessly? It's not just "exfoliate first."

Self-tanners to try: Jergens Natural Glow Foaming Daily Moisturizer ($9.99), Olay Complete Touch of Sun UV Moisturizer SPF 15 ($18.99), Nivea Summer Touch Firming Gradual Tan ($8.90) and Clarins Liquid Bronze ($36). And speaking of Victoria's Secret, the brand's BeachSexy Adjustable Self-Tan Lotion with Shimmer ($16) is nifty: the dial at the top of the bottle allows you to choose settings between Subtly Sunkissed and Deep Bronze.

You already know you have to exfoliate before self-tanner. But that follow-up tip from Christopher Ardoff – did you know that?
