"A boring green plant," "dinner paid for by meal plan and a guilt trip for taking time from studying," and "a book from Dad called Finding Mr. Right" were some of the answers I got in response to a twitter poll on the worst-ever Valentine's Day gifts. And although irons and electric can openers are good gifts, they are not appropriate for Valentine's Day unless they're part of something swoonworthy. Like Clive Owen is presenting them with a twinkle in his eye, before he makes breakfast. For me.
I can't help the singletons with well-wishing fathers, but for anyone looking for "spoontime"-earning gift ideas, consider one or two or three! of these range of suggestions from my friends in the StyleCollective.ca:
ChickAdvisor’s Ali and Claire think along the same lines I do: "Nothing says sexy time on Valentine's Day like a shower. We can't get enough cheeky Soap & Glory. The flirty scents are sexy and delicious with notes of citrus, bergamot, mandarin, jasmine and freesia on a mix of musks, sandalwood, vanilla and amber. As for Sexy Mother Pucker lip gloss, the name alone is enough to make us big fans." Soap & Glory Clean, Girls body wash, $9.99; Scrub ’Em & Leave ’Em body buff, $14.99; Sexy Mother Pucker lip gloss, $9.99; all at Shoppers Drug Mart.
Well.ca’s Sameera is steaming up the bathroom, too. "Have your man try something new and shave the old-fashioned way with Natural Grooming by Herban Cowboy Shave Soap and the Organic Grooming by Herban Cowboy Shave Brush for a more comfortable, quality shave. You can warm up together in the tub with Aura Cacia aromatherapy, and sip mugs of Cocoa Camino, which offers a yummy-licious array of indulgent cocoa products."
IWantIGot’s Anita likes a mix of a little makeup with a little fashion. "The DaLish Cosmetics and Jessica Jensen collaboration is the perfect make-up duo. Choose from five limited-edition kits, including a selection of DaLish Cosmetics and a pink embossed ostrich leather cosmetic bag. Look for my favourite lipstick colour, Ruby Red, in the Berry Delight Kit." $48 at dalishcosmetics.com or shopjessicajensen.com.
I'mTheItGirl’s Anya is setting a luxurious, fragrant mood. "Roses are predictable but Roseros are certainly not. French luxury perfumiers Diptyque pay homage to the 'opposites attract' love between Beauty and the Beast with a duo of candles with help from famed French illustrators Kuntzel & Deygas. One is Rose, a romantic garden rose, and the other Eros, its spicier counterpart. Together they create a perfect harmony, hence the name Roseros." $94 (for the pair) at Holt Renfrew.
Gifted’s Allie suggests a saucy, straightforward approach. "A little something for your special someone (or current makeout partner). This Valentine's Day, if you're feeling a little shy, let the pillow do the talking." $89 USD at etsy.com.
Coco&Lowe can also be counted on for eye-catching accessories. According to Coco, "Lowe and I have fallen for this beautiful yet simple gold Mini Hamsa Curb Chain Bracelet by Jennifer Zeuner. Not only is gorgeous, the Hamsa (or Khamsa) is supposed to ward off the evil eye - SCORE! Positivity 1, Negativity 0! Happy Valentines Day." $190 at charmandchain.com.
AtHomeWithKimVallee’s Kim heats up the kitchen. "Your guy will earn points if he brings you breakfast in bed on Valentine's Day. To make it easy for him, he could get: heart-shaped eggs springs ($15 USD at Williams-Sonoma), and serve your eggs with a warm French croissant and your favourite berry jam; make you a tasty cup of coffee thanks to the Bodum Chambord Coffee Press, $34.99 CAD at Amazon.ca; serve you a chilled glass of Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin Rose($77.40 at LCBO) in a SVALKA Champagne glass ($6.99 CAD for 6) at Ikea; finish the meal with a heart-shaped whoopie pie that he baked with Red Velvet Whoopie Pie Mix ($8.95 USD at Crate and Barrel)."
SweetPotatoChronicles’ Ceri and Laura are keeping the kitchen fires burning. "For those who are new to our site: we're all about healthy family food. Scratch the surface, however, and you'll find pancakes. Every kind you can imagine and more in the works. You could say we're a little obsessed. So if our sweethearts wanted to spoil us this Valentine's Day they could whip up a batch of these Pumpkin Gingerbread pancakes and make them in these sweet molds ($5.95 from Crate and Barrel). Oh, and let us sleep in."
BeautyEditor’s Michelle may be able to help the singletons with well-meaning fathers after all. "Smell like a boy (in a good way), whether or not there's actually one in your life this V-Day. Designed by actress Kate Walsh, this new fragrance captures the scent of a guy, on a girl." The Boyfriend Kit, $105 at Sephora.com.
Staff's all over the hot-in-the-kitchen gifts. She'll have to do the cooking herself, though. Clive-O's busy.
