I have home hair colour on the brain. Angela Kinsey, who plays colourless Angela on "The Office," and super-perky Gigi in Clairol Nice 'n Easy commercials, was in Toronto recently to share her tales of Clairol DIY colour. Vibrant and funny, Kinsey has an interesting history, which you can find on the Clairol website. Right now, let's address a major hair colour issue: permanent or demi permanent dye -- which one is right is for you?

Today I'll be at Hair on the Avenue in Toronto with five lovely, lucky BeautyGeeks subscribers, winners of a Clairol Natural Instincts VIP Day offered in a recent BeautyGeeks contest. Nadia, Janice, Doris, Tammy and Paula will join readers from, and for a brilliant experience of expert colour, makeup, photos, and cocktails, natch.

We'll be watching for great home colour tips, but I've got one key tip to share now regarding how to choose the right formula: permanent or demi permanent? What's the basic difference between permanent dye as in Clairol's Nice 'n Easy, and demi-permanent types, such as Natural Instincts, and how do you pick the right one?

permanent hair colour

Permanent hair colour is an excellent choice for significant change and for total coverage of grey. The shade intensity fades just a bit over the course of the six to eight weeks it takes for you to see root regrowth, but the colour won't wash out entirely. Going several shades darker with a permanent formula is a snap. You can go lighter, but the chemistry in the mix will lighten by only a shade or two. For more than that, see a salon pro.

demi permanent hair colour

Demi permanent hair colour respectfully fades away in about 28 washes so you don't get obvious roots. It's designed for the woman who doesn't want to commit to a major colour change, and who doesn't want or need to cover greys entirely (demi-permanent colour is a little transparent on some greys, turning them into highlights instead of dyeing them the same as the rest). You won't get drastic colour changes with this formula, but you will get a shine boost and natural-looking results.

From 4 pm on, we'll be tweeting and twitpic-ing from the Clairol Natural Instincts VIP event to share more tips, details on how our participants feel about their new, demi-permanent colour, as well as the rest of the fun.
