Lesson: It occurred to me that unless you're steeped in beauty culture as beauty editors and makeup-obssessed types are, the name "Shu Uemura" might cause a little pronounciation puzzlement. "Shoo you-uh-myura" should do the trick, or at least make you sound like you're completely in the beauty know.
Next lesson: if you have oily skin and can't get your makeup to stay on with standard silicone-heavy primers, give this one a go. A lightly tinted foam/mousse, Shu Uemura UV Under Base SPF 30 ($45) dries down on skin quickly, imparts a subtle radiance without shimmer, and keeps makeup in its place. It contains silicone, yes, but the formula is super light and super comfortable if you don't like the feel of stuff on your skin. Plus it has SPF 30.
End of lesson.
UPDATE: *sigh* The thing about some works-brilliantly products is that they contain ingredients that startle. Propane is in the Shu Uemura UV Under Base Mousse mix, apparently to propell the product from the can, says Shu's Canadian PR. From Shu Uemura in Japan came this:
Each raw material used in Shu Uemura formulas is validated by safety tests before going on the market. This is of course the case with propane. At the formula level, Shu Uemura UVUB mousse has successfully passed all the safety tests: it is allergy tested and dermatologist tested.
Shu Uemura is available at Holt Renfrew.
