Yeeeesh it's been a week. Although I don't have a regular 9-to-5, I'm as glad to see Friday as you are. The last few weeks have been jammed, and the next few weeks... well. I'm not complaining, you know. I'm amazed at how much I love this freelance life, the charge I get every time I file a story, find an interesting turn of phrase, learn something new, meet someone interesting, answer a "help me" e.mail and get a new idea. I'm just starting to understand that those times spent staring blearily at the screen despairing that the words I need have gone AWOL yet again mean that it's time for a break (like sleep).
"Balance" is the word I keep hearing from kindly writerly friends who deal with the same issues. "Work hard, play harder," is another phrase that comes to mind -- see? when the words I want sneak out, overused phrasing crowds in. Sheesh.
On the other hand, there's something to the work-hard-play-harder thing, a reason the phrase is playing echo to the word Balance. Redirecting the brain from intense work toward intense fun helps it recharge. So I gotta do that. And now I'm thinking "bowling." If anything can distract big, it's hurling a ball at a bunch of things and making a ruckus and a fool of yourself at the same time.
On June 18, I can bowl in a bowlathonand help the Fort York Food Bank at the same time. The $500 donation from four others and me for one lane is going to such a good place. In response to an increase in families with children showing up each month, the food bank just opened a Saturday Kids Zone. Now there's a place for kiddies to play while their parent(s) zip through an express lane to select the food they need for their family. On top of that, some Saturdays see the organization's community kitchen serving up to 200 lunches.
The 5th Annual FYFB Strike Out Hunger Bowlathon is taking place next Thursday evening at Newtonbrook Plaza's Bowlerama, 5837 Yonge St, Toronto, from 6:30 to 8:30. Anyone else interested in redirecting their work-busy minds or making a donation, click here for deets. Hope to see you there!
Oh, and it's probably 10-pin, not five. Five-pin just worked better for my Friday "F is for" theme. Anyway, 10-pin makes a bigger ruckus and is five more ways for me to make a fool. Cool.
