See this Reitmans package? About the size of a small packet of tissues, it's my newest checkout conversation starter. With the first unfold, weary cash-desk staffers break from indifferent or super-bored mode because this thing turns into a tote more roomy than they expect. Looks of surprise blink into wonder-tinged admiration at the bag's size, and I look like a genius because I've obviously cracked a complex folding code in order to get the bag neatly into its weensy casing. And as I prepare to leave, folks always ask where I got the bag (they can't see the logo when the bag's unfolded because the envelope turns into an interior pocket).

No, this concept isn't a new one. We've seen many such bags over the years. It's just that this Reitmans tote ($3) folds into a size so compact that a couple of them take up hardly any space in your purse. And that makes saying no to plastic much easier.
