F is for First Resolution of 2010: 100% Natural Organic Kitchen by Upper Canada (on The Shopping Channel Today)

1 January 2010

Happy New Year! So. Resolutions. I don’t know about yours, but mine are the same resolutions I seem to make every few days: get to appointments on time, use the TTC more and taxis less, cook good-for-me foods and cut back on take-out or delivery, drink more water, get more sleep, up my fitness factor, [...]

The Write Stuff: Botanical Paperworks Handmade Plantable Paper Journals

21 December 2009

I’ve fallen in love with a notebook. I’m sweet on a lovely string-closure softcover recycled-paper type from Botanical Paperworks, a Winnipeg-based company. The 150-page (lined), 4.75 x 8.5″ journal ($24) has a nubby wildflower-seeded cover almost too pretty to plant.

15 December 2009

How about a makeup rah-rah for our Olympic athletes? Vasanti Cosmetics is all about that with their newest makeup palette, Go Canada! ($40), which gleams with metallic gold, silver, and bronze shadows, a white higlighter and sheer red lip colour. Gargi Patel, head makeup artist for the Canadian company, says to layer

Happy Face: Pandora’s Makeup Box is Worth Smiling About

17 November 2009

A new Canadian line of colour cosmetics aims to make a beauty impression with cheerful eco-responsible packaging, a wearable palette of hues and high-pigment formulas.
“I wanted it to be a happy line,” says Pandora’s Makeup Box creator Susan Kirsch, a successful makeup artist and owner of Kirsch Cosmetic Studio in Toronto. “Why does makeup packaging [...]

Local News: Consult with Ojon’s Denis Simioni at Murale October 2

27 September 2009

Some like to call charismatic Ojon founder Denis Simioni the Indiana Jones of haircare on account of his Central American adventure to find the home of Ojon oil (see the “movie” here). He’s actually become something of a Canadian sensation thanks to the brand’s success as well as his popular and lively appearances on The [...]

Helping Palm: Lush Palm-Free Soap Helps Indonesian Rainforests and Orangutans

12 August 2009

You know from palm oil. High in saturated fat, it’s in certain cooking oils, soap products and processed food. Produced in Africa, Malaysia and Indonesia, palm oil is huge business, especially in Indonesia. Unfortunately, it’s also an industry that delivers a major deforestation bitchslap as new plantations continue to crop up.

Suck Up: Ojon Restorative Pre-Cleansing Treatment

6 August 2009

Thought I’d let the staff write the headline for today’s post. Now I have to explain it. *sigh*
Ever watered a completely dried-out orchid? The potting mix is so dry that it can’t absorb anything on initial contact, so the water runs right over everything straight into the saucer. (I can hear the staff mocking my [...]

F is for Fake It: Glowing Sun-Flushed Cheeks

31 July 2009

One of my all-time favourite makeup things is DuWop Bronzerush, a simple yet genius compact combo with a sheer, golden bronze powder on one side and a gel blush in sheer red on the other. I confess, at first I frowned at the idea of sweeping the powder bronzer over cheekbones before dabbing on the [...]

If I Were Skinny I Would Wear That: Adidas Techfit Powerweb Tank (+ the right sports bra)

30 July 2009

Shopping for a stylin’ fitness wardrobe is workout incentive, I say. Forget baggy stained tees and saggy-knees leggings — wearing something like that just makes a girl feel like an unattractive whale on a sesame-seed bun. Well, maybe just me, but you get the point. As much as you are what you eat, you are [...]

Makeup Housekeeping: BeautySoClean Cosmetic Sanitizers

29 July 2009

Ever thought about the bacteria that lives on your makeup? Sure, you’ve shuddered at what camps out on beauty-counter samples, but your personal make-pretty stuff hosts colonies of ickies too.

Enter to WIN: GliSODin Skin Nutrients Advanced Detox and Daily Formula

28 July 2009

If you’re thinking, “heck, I can eat all the good-skin stuff I need in my day-to-day diet,” frankly I’m jealous. Clearly you lead an organized life.

Beauty Pills: GliSODin Skin Nutrients Professional Nutricosmetics

28 July 2009

Popular in Europe, health-and-beauty supplements are still eyed with a certain amount of mistrust in North America. “You are what you eat” is a cliché, but co-exists with the dismissive “so little of what you eat actually reaches your skin.” Well, I can tell when sugar reaches my skin. Or when water doesn’t because I’m [...]

Free Wash & Style: Essensity and the City at Five Salons in Toronto

27 July 2009

If I’d had more time, I’d have bribed Patricia at Solo Bace in Toronto for a longer head massage. Genius way to start the day, on a Monday especially. Even better when the head massage is the start of a free wash and blowdry, makeup touch-up, a remember-this-day snapshot and a little sample bag to [...]
