dior state of gold collection swatches & review
I love the Dior holiday nail polish bottles. They might be my favourite of ever. The brush nub is easy to hold, easy to control, and the brush itself is a marvel of nail-painting application. Dior brushes are the best.
Dior Mystère (aka Diorific Mystère) is a finely tuned oxblood shade that walks the line between cherry, plum, and merlot. Available now at sephora.ca and sephora.com, it’s awfully sophisticated and seasonally appropriate. That’s two incredibly easy coats with no top coat. Dior Vernis is such a pleasure to apply. If you haven’t ever used a Dior, put it on your to-do list. You’ll know why after you’ve painted your first nail.
Dior Mystère 991 Vernis (above) is undoubtedly a beautiful bottle of polish. From start to finish, it’s everything you hope it’ll be when you open the box. But it’s disappointingly boring. Ho hum… seen it before a jillion times. Oh yes, I just said that – about a Dior Holiday Vernis.
Dior State of Gold Vernis 001 over Dior Mystère 991 (above). What are you looking at up there? It’s a glittery silver, gold, and white gold confection of happy. That’s one coat of State of Gold over Mystère and it’s just enough to make it all kinds of blingtastic for the holidays. Well done, Dior. A grown-up glitter that applies like a dream. I’m not bored now. Yay!
Dior Gris-Or 227 aka Diorific Gris-Or Vernis is interesting (and available now via sephora.ca and sephora.com). Pinky gold and yet not rose gold – almost green-gold in some lights. Subtle in shiftyness, in two simple coats, it’s really a lovely shade for holiday.
Diorific Gris-Or 227 (above). But you know what? It’s streaky – even when it dries down. If it came out looking like it does in the bottle, I’d be so happy. But it doesn’t. Close, but not close enough for me. Again, I’m disappointed, and I’m not often disappointed by Dior.
Diorific State of Gold 001 over Dior Gris-Or (above). Oooh!! Lookit that! Redemption! When you slap a single coat of State of Gold over Gris-Or, a little of that pink shift still comes through and all trace of streaky has totally vanished! Do I like this holiday combination? Hellz yes! I mean come on! It’s perfectly Diorific!
Dior State of Gold over Gris-Or (above). And here’s an angle you’ve never seen from me before! That came out okay, huh? These bottles are the most challenging things I shoot all year. With so much reflective gold at the top, it’s insanely difficult for me to shoot these things without getting reflections of myself in the gold of the bottles. Here, I’m hiding under the desk. If you could see, you’d laugh your ass off. But the photo came out swell! And the polish looks beautiful – because it is. You’ll want to slap a top coat over it though – all that glitter makes for a textured finish that you can smooth out nicely with a top coat. It’ll prolong the life of your polish job too.
Diorific Vernis Passion 951 (above). Mm-hm. It’s red. Surprise! Not. Close enough to Dior Rouge 999 that you don’t need one if you have the other, this is a tiny bit more bricky than the marginally more poppy red Rouge. Perfectly applicable for Holiday, I just wish it was a little more… something.
Diorific Passion 951 (above). It’s classic though, and maybe that’s what Dior was shooting for with this collection. It hits all the standard holiday notes and is to me, (except for State of Gold 001), somewhat... underwhelming.
So there you have it, full coverage of the Dior State of Gold Diorific Vernis 2015 Collection. If you’re new to polish-land or perhaps only buy luxury polish every once in a while, this holiday 2015 collection might be something you’ll be interested in.
But, if like me you have a reasonable-sized archive, are you as disappointed as I am or do those beautiful bottles build it up enough to make you think it’s stuff you need to have? I’m not going to tell you this collection is stellar, because to me the only stellar thing about it is the bottle and brush. That’s not enough for me to forgo my Crunchy Cheetos this holiday season. Nope.
The limited-edition Dior holiday 2015 State of Gold collection is already rolling out at sephora.ca and sephora.com. Not everything is available right this minute, but should be soon. You'll find the collection at thebay.com too, as of October 15th.
