Burt Shavitz, the eccentric co-founder and face of Burt's Bees has died. According to Burt's Bees, he passed away in Maine on Sunday July 5th, 2015. He was 80 years old.
Said the brand via its Burt's Bees US Facebook page:
It is with broken hearts that we must convey the saddest news: Burt Shavitz, our co-founder and namesake, has left for greener fields and wilder woods. We remember him as a bearded, free-spirited Maine man, a beekeeper, a wisecracker, a lover of golden retrievers and his land. Above all, he taught us to never lose sight of our relationship with nature. Now it’s up to us, the brand he helped build—and you, his fans and advocates—to sustain his spirit and ideals. Thanks for everything, Burt. We’ll miss you.
I really enjoyed Burt's Buzz, the 2013 docu-film on Burt Shavitz and his relationship with the company that bore his name and, for a time, his likeness. Have you seen it? Really good stuff on how the business expanded from just an anti-social guy and his bees to the billion-dollar brand it's become. A longtime Maine resident (he was born and raised in Great Neck, New York), dude was a millionaire who preferred a simple life in a converted chicken coop without hot water, and his dog as companion. So that's how he lived.
RIP, Burt Shavitz.
