Scent Duets: Seven Sexy Winter Fragrances + Lipstick to Wear With Them

guccipremiere_blake livelyAs much as the Beautygeeks team loves light and fresh fragrances, in winter they just seem wrong. (Fun fact: light scent molecules don’t waft so well in the cold.) For the holiday season and sub-zero months beyond, think darker, richer, and more complicated. More outré. And let’s up the sexy stakes: Think pairing, as in champagne with strawberries — except with perfume personality and lipstick shades. Beautygeeks know fragrance and lip colour both speak without words; we’d like to keep what they’re saying in sync.

Gucci Premiere_Shiseido Shimmering Rouge Lipstick in RD718 Sugar Plum.jpgGucci Premiere de Gucci This ethereal mix (alluded to in its transparent bottle) of white flowers and musk really demands that it be worn with heavy silk men’s pyjamas, preferably in midnight blue or a silvery cream, like the inside of an oyster shell. And wear your hair in a heavy, glossy cascading swath like Blake Lively. Shiseido Shimmering Rouge lipstick in RD718 Sugar Plum A deep rosy nude (like post-snog lips), this sheer shade glimmers with sophisticated, grown-up shimmer (Dick Page don’t do no sparkle). Eau de Parfum, 50 mL, $108, The Bay, Sephora, Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutiques, Murale, Ogilvy. Shiseido lipstick, $25,

2_Balenciaga Florabotanica_Hourglass lip stainBalenciaga Florabotanica If we say that Florabotanica smells flowery but dirty, would you still try it? It smells like someone who wore a beautiful Balenciaga dress to a party, ended up sleeping with an artist in his loft, picked her dress up from the floor the next morning and put it back on. See Kristen Stewart in the print ads for a perfect illustration of said scenario. Hourglass Aura Sheer Lipstain in Scarlet Described as a soft plum, this shade is actually more of a berry red stain that looks best when it’s a bit worn in, like you’ve been making out a little. (Prep lips with hydrating serum so they don’t get flaky). Eau de Parfum Spray 50 ml $90, The Bay, Holt Renfrew, Ogilvy, Murale, Shoppers Drug Mart/ Pharmaprix, Sephora. Hourglass lipstain, $31,

3_Lancome La Vie est Belle_Lancome Rouge in Love in Violette CoquetteLancome La Vie est Belle Like Julia Roberts with her wraparound grin, La Vie est Belle exudes a cheery, energized sexiness. With pear, praline and spun sugar added to iris for an almost edible allure, it’s happy, not sultry. Lancome Rouge in Love Lipstick in 381B Violette Coquette Vibrant and playful, this fuchsia-violet shade is just shy of electric, a standout among bright lipsticks. Too violet for you? MAC Amplified Creme Lipstick in Girl About Town, a deep cool fuchsia, is a worthy alternative. Eau de Parfum, 30 mL, $72, Lancome counters, and select pharmacies. Lancôme lipstick, $30,; MAC lipstick, $18,

4_Madonna_Truth or Dare_Make Up For Ever Liquid Lip Color 8Madonna Truth or Dare Think more platinum-haired Madonna in a satin cone bra than latter-day aerobicized mom. Truth or Dare blends a classic white floral with addictive caramel and vanilla for a swooningly narcotic mix. Make Up For Ever Aqua Rouge Waterproof Liquid Lip Color in Iconic Red Some might say this true red Madonna wears on stage is too easy a choice, but we say pshaw. Madge’s makeup artist Gina Brooke, who created the shade for her, told Beautygeeks that it’s a red every skintone can wear, warm or cool. And the comfortable formula won’t smear or smudge or move forEVER. Win, win. Eau de Parfum 50 ml, $65, The Bay, Sears, Sephora, Shoppers Drug Mart, Jean Coutu. Make Up For Ever lip colour, $27,

Valentina Assoluto_Giorgio Armani lipstickValentino Valentina Assoluta A floral (Jasmine! Tuberose!) with an earthy edge (Patchouli! White truffles!), Valentina Assoluta is the fragrance equivalent of an floaty, high-necked chiffon dress that’s demure from the front but totally backless. Giorgio Armani Rouge d’Armani Lipstick in 401 A youthful, exuberant orange red, this shade seems more innocent than powerful, yet packs quite the visual punch. Mission accomplished. Eau de Parfum, 50 mL, $105, Holt Renfrew, The Bay, Ogilvy. Giorgio Armani lipstick, $38, Holt Renfrew.

boucheron-jaipur-bracelet-eau-de-parfum_Ilia beauty lipstick in Ink PotBoucheron Jaipur Bracelet Restrained doesn’t have to mean boring. Herbs like basil and lemon verbena enliven Jaipur Bracelet’s floral side and give it a cool, Grace-Kelly-in-Rear-Window sexiness. It goes really well with a pair of large-ish, brilliant-cut diamond stud earrings, in case anyone needs an idea for a gift to go with. ILIA Lipstick in Ink Pot This natural-formula limited-edition purple lipstick is similar to the Lancome Rouge in Love in Violette Coquette — just not quite so pink. A tad more restrained, if you will. Yet no less fabulous. Eau de Parfum spray, 50 mlm $112, exclusively at The Bay. ILIA lipstick, $24,

7_Givenchy-Dahlia-Noir_Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet in La ProvocanteGivenchy Dahlia Noir Dahlia Noir is a harmonious fusion of two conflicting images. Powdery, gentle iris lures you in to its soft, pretty lair but then patchouli, earthy rose and sandalwood tie you up and have their way with you. If you wore this fragrance and you were slightly sweaty after a workout, that would work too. Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Lipstick in La Provocante Fun fact: this intense blackened-berry velvet-matte shade echoes the colour in a dahlia hybrid called “Mystery Day.” It’s also deeply sophisticated, dark and striking much like the totally cool Dahlia Noir television ad we love enough to embed below. Eau de Parfum 50 ml, $104, The Bay, Shoppers Drug Mart, Sephora. Chanel lipstick, $40, department stores.

Whether you’re swanning around in a gown, having a wine-and-cheese floor-picnic in front of the fire with the object of your affection, or lounging on the couch in head-to-toe fleece while burning through the “Friday Night Lights” box set, let your inner sexpot reign.

And tell us: what lip colour would you wear with your favourite sexy scent? Do you agree with our pairings?

I have requested 4 separate fragrances on my 2012 Wish List. Once I see what I’ve received, I’m gonna message you lovelies for lipstick-pairing recommendations!!
Happy Holidays :)

Liza 19 December 2012 at 10:27 pm

Ooh. Details please- what did you ask for?

J-Mo 20 December 2012 at 9:36 am

Signorina by Salvatore Ferregamo, Chloe, Romance by Ralph Lauren & Burberry Body. The last two are old staples but the first two are new requests!! Doubt I’ll get them all (hoping for two) but a girl can dream…..

Liza 20 December 2012 at 5:39 pm

Good list. Give Santa a choice. (Oh, and Burberry Body has a limited edition ‘flanker’ coming out this Spring that everyone at the press preview swooned over. So stay tuned. It’s amazing.)

I love the idea of fragrance & lipstick pairing! I’ll try to sample Balenciaga, the bottle is so interesting & different. Love it!

Janine 22 December 2012 at 4:38 am

It was Liza’s idea — she’s so clever! Do you think you’ll try the Hourglass lip stain, or another lip stain in a similar colour? To see if for you, the colour and finish fits the fragrance?
