Lady Gaga Fame: New Perfume is Black and “Smells Like an Expensive Hooker”

by Janine on 13 June 2012 · 25 comments

A little earlier than intended, well in advance of its August or September launch, Lady Gaga fans finally know the name of her new perfume by Coty, as well as a few other key details. UPDATE: I’ve included an audio clip in which Gaga explains the blood-and-semen elements.

1) The fragrance is called Fame. Gaga tweeted the bottle and box image to 25,663,570 @LadyGaga followers today.

2) The juice is a black fluid, and apparently becomes invisible when spritzed.

3) In the Australian radio clip below, Gaga revealed inspiration details:

“…the perfume smells like an expensive hooker…. I wanted to extract sort of the feeling and the sense of blood and semen from molecular structures, so that’s where that came from. That is in the perfume but it doesn’t smell like it — you just get the after feeling of sex from the semen and the blood is primal. It was taken out of my own blood sample so it’s a sense of having me on your skin.”

4) Gaga tweeted a few minutes later, “Here’s what it smells like!” with the above snapshot. The description reads:

Tears of Belladonna
Crushed Heart of Tiger Orchidea
With a Black Veil of Incense
Pulverized Apricot
And the Combinative Essences
of Saffron and Honey Drops

First of its kind, this perfume
is an innovation in fluid technology
It’s black like the soul of fame,
but invisible once airborn.

5) You may have heard the details about Fame leaked out before they were supposed to. I’ll leave you to discover how. #googlebutton

Are you a Lady Gaga fan? What do you think about the bottle and the scent description?

UPDATE: On July 18th, Gaga released this vid on the scent’s formulation.

On August 14th, the star released her provocative (natch) trailer for Fame.

And here’s an ad featuring a starkers Gaga being scaled by Liliputian men…

UPDATE 2: See the full-length mini film for Fame (by Steven Klein), all the details from the launch of Lady Gaga Fame, the Lady Gaga interview and footage of her masquerade party to celebrate Fame’s official debut here. (The shoes! The nails!)

I’m somewhat disgusted that a woman with so much influence and who has such a young fan-base, could possibly be stupid enough to hype her fragrance in a way that promotes prostitution.

Wait. I’m not somewhat disgusted. I’m downright disgusted.

Haters can suck d**k,this perfume is innovative, constructive and pretty sure smells divine! And just because it smells like an expensive hooker doesn’t mean she’s promoting prostitution!Expensive hookers are known to smell good.

I have a small sample from the bay and surprisingly, it smells amazing!! I thought it would be a strong nasty smell but its a soft nice smell

I’m sure I’ll take a sniff to satisfy curiosity if I see it in stores but I really don’t see myself wanting to smell like “expensive hooker”. Also, while I agree with the comment above I’m also not at all surprised that Gaga would create this or market it this way. It seems very typical Gaga.

I am a Lady Gaga fan, and the description DOES make me recoil a bit. But in saying that, i’ll save my judgement to when I can smell it.

The back description reads like it was ghostwritten by Francesca Lia Block!

I’ve never read any of Francesca Lia Block’s work, but now I want to. I kind of dig the fragrance copy!

Ooooh read Weetzie Bat… my 14 year old self would have done ANYTHING to live the lives of her characters, aka why this fragrance will do so well.

Never heard of FLB so I just looked her up and I have to say thank you for introducing her to me. Can’t wait to read my first Francesca Lia Block book. Jeez, ya’ just never know what’s waiting for you when you’re checking out nail polishes and lipsticks. :)

I love The GaGa. Her description is a hoot. Her audacity is so f**kin’ refreshing and her sense of humour is way above most heads. Gotta sniff it for sure. AND I love that it’s black. She is one of a perfect kind.

The description and fragrance look like something Bowie would have put out back in the early ’70s if celebrity fragrances had been in back then. The style of the bottle looks quite ’70s glam as well. Typical Gaga to rehash something like this I suppose.

It’s kind of fun that this type of thing is still provoking outraged reactions like the one above, haha. I guess mission accomplished for her.
