A DIY mani takes a different turn when it comes to your cat. Have you heard of this thing, nail tips for kitties?
Nope, not polish, acrylic or UV gel, but vinyl tips that fit over natural cat nails, SoftPaws were developed by a vet as an alternative to having cats de-clawed. The process apparently causes them no pain, although there’s an adjustment period, and it’s something you can do yourself, as per the clip below snapped from a how-to video on the Soft Paws website.
A package of Soft Paws consists of 40 nail tips and two tubes of glue, and retails for under $20 USd plus shipping. A variety of colours – including glitter! — are available as well as clear. And of course there’s a Q&A section you’ll want to consult.
Is this something you’d consider for kitty? If you already know from Soft Paws, have you tried them? And who has the better mani, you or your cat?

HOLY. F*&K.
Ahh ha ha ha!
Oooh! Perfect for Dexter. I’ll pull a Jenna Lyons and get some hot pink ones.
Amazing.
I’ve seen these in pet shops but always thought they were for the truly crazy cat ladies to dress their cats up in…
Why not just trim the cat’s nails instead of declawing?
However that photo certainly does look adorable! Maybe my kitty would wear them….? LOL I’m not going to pay $20 to find out!
This is a bit of a frivolous look at the Soft Paws, but they’re actually quite useful when it comes to protecting furniture and people from scratches. My superintendent, Dinah, told me about them. Her daughter does this for her cat every three weeks or so; the family just got new floors.
haha, these looks cute but i won’t do it if i have a cat! i’d rather spend the money on myself, hihihi…
In answer to “Why not just trim the cat’s nails instead of declawing?” My cat is a scratcher, she is especially fond of sofas. Trimming does not deter her I assure you, and I refuse to declaw her. I can deal with my own furniture being clawed if I really have to however when she had to stay with friends due to me being out of the country I needed a way to deal with it. Enter these little claw caps. I popped a set on her front claws for the month I was away and my friends furniture was left unscathed. A much less expensive option than replacing someones furniture :)
Brilliant! They’re less goofy than they sound, right? I just think it’s funny that they come in different colours, including glitter!
Yes, I knew about these (actually watched a TV special about cats last week). I’d get them for my little cat (she is driving me bananas every dawn scratching at the walls) but, no, she can’t have prettier nails than I do.
She’s already vain as it is.
(in all seriousness, though, if I had to choose, I prefer this option over declawing)
Kitty Wigs might interest you, btw:

So you’ll have to get the clear Soft Paws then. *grin* This KittyWigs thing is hilarious. Far less useful, but hilarious!
And now I’ve seen it all.
Probably not…
What Lesa said.
*grin*
I’m sure my cats would just chew these off. I hope they’re edible!
According to the Soft Paws website — they were invented by a vet, btw — they do the cat no harm if consumed. They just pass through the pet’s digestive system. Apparently the glue is non-toxic as well. :-)
I tried the Soft Paws a few years ago when my cats were scratching the walls, the furniture, under the bed….you name it. The first two times, we went to the vet. After that I did it myself. The cats hated it in the beginning but got used to it. The one problem we had was a nail that didn’t get trimmed down enough before putting on the tips. The nail grew just enough that the tip curved into the pad. Timmy was not at all happy when I had to cut that nail down. It was difficult to get between the tip and the pad. We’ve been more careful since and all are happy. It’s a really good product.
Yes, they’re for real, and yes, they work. My cat didn’t scratch, but if you picked her up, she wanted to hold on, or climb, and both involved claws. Yeowch.
So I used soft paws on my kitty for many years. She was all black, and the red ones looked completely elegant, and the purple were funky!
(repeat to self: I am NOT a crazy cat lady, I am NOT a crazy cat lady…) :-D
Thanks so much for your comments, Ann and Heather! I’m sure you’re not a crazy cat lady, Heather. *grin*
