I’ve found my next mani on page 175 of the May issue of FASHION Magazine, which officially hits newsstands today. The story is “Garden Punch,” featuring six pages of to-die-for nails by Leanne Colley of Tips Nail Bar. Of course. *grin*
Killer, right? If only the story were eligible for entry in the Contessa Awards, an annual industry-accolades event that bestows peer kudos on Canadian hair stylists and colourists. There is a nail-enhancement category — Leeanne has won twice, actually — but published images aren’t permitted.
(Published hair images are permitted, in the “Session Stylist” category, but only because a few years back yours truly kicked up a fuss that editorial-hair brilliance was being ignored. As far as beauty editors are concerned, fantastic hair that appears in the country’s top fashion and beauty mags is the pinnacle of stylist skill. The stylists who do that kind of work are the stylists we want to interview and hire for photoshoots.)
Well, maybe it’s okay there’s no Contessa Award for editorial nail skill yet. To be fair, as Pollyanna insists on pointing out, nail-focussed beauty stories have only just begun to make a magazine splash again. (There isn’t a P&G Beauty Award for nails either, although there is one for hair/makeup.)
So maybe next year? Should there be a petition? Pick up a copy of FASHION and tell me what you think! (Also, aren’t the lips killer too?)

Yes! There needs to be a new category. Will you start a petition?
So funny — I was eyeing that self-same page and blissing out in its summery, orange popsicle goodness.
Maybe — will you sign it? The story is eligible as a makeup story because it’s about lips too (love, love, love), but that’s only half of the beauty in it.
I kinda want to frame it so I can stare at it on my wall on dreary days!
It won’t be long before nails hold a permanent spot in the spotlight, so to speak. OPI, CND, etc. have been around for quite a while but I feel like in the past few years there’s been a lot of new lines released. More than before.
Even existing beauty brands have really started to focus on nail polishes and heck, if we look at eBay and the bidding wars on beauty products, a lot of times it’s nail polish. Hello Chanel Black Satin anyone?
Can’t wait to see nail polish wielding colorists start getting the recognition they deserve in the beauty industry!
On another note, I just came across your blog today and have added to my favourites. Can’t believe I didn’t know about it before! ;)
I think perhaps nails are bigger now than they’ve ever been — amazing! And I think it wouldn’t have happened if the economy hadn’t tanked — most polish is priced better than a lot of lipsticks these days!
Thanks re: finding us! :-)
LOVE! (As I look down at my sad home painted nails). I’m still not feeling long nails though. I like mine short and clean.
I used to have nails like this, years ago! I started wearing my nails a bit on the long side before I hit 10, now that I think about it. Whoa. I do prefer a more oval shape, though, mostly because I think it’s a stronger shape for my weak nails. But now there’s Axxium…
I did my own nails a coupla days ago http://tinyurl.com/6c7tjw9 (yes, at home AND before I saw this post) and while mine don’t look NEARLY as good as those gorgeous things Leanne did there, I’m SO down with the orange ‘n red combo. Great minds must think alike! Next time, I’ma roll with some blue ‘n green and maybe something other than Scotch Tape to see if I can’t get closer to that awesomeness that Leanne makes happen.
What am I supposed to use instead of Scotch Tape? Is there some kinda template with a curve that I can buy somewhere?
You have enviable nail beds, You — and elegant. Nail-art folks must love them! I rather like the straight edge you’ve achieved. And I love that you’ve revealed yourself as someone who doesn’t do the standard porno French manicure! Because French mani kits usually include curved sticker strips to use as a polish guide on your tips :-)
