Knock, Knock: Door-to-Door Hot Waxing?

by Janine on 9 November 2010 · 11 comments

If you’re hirsute in Hong Kong, you may well be perfectly situated. According to my friend Carla, who lived there for a stretch, inexpensive pedicures can be a feat to find. But if it’s hair removal you’re after, at-home waxing finds you. And rather than come in a boxed kit, it comes in the form of standing appointments with women who go door-to-door, carrying with them a bucket of wax, fresh fabric strips and plastic-wrapped spatulas. They’re in, it’s off and they’re out, for about $5 a visit.

That’s some kind of brilliant rip-off.

Among other clever things, Carla is an incredible writer. Read her wonderful posts about her life, family and experiences here.

And at $5, a heck of a deal! Hong Kong is not a cheap city. I imagine they do it really quick – ow ow – but efficient for everyone!

There must be mobile esthetic services that handle this sort of thing, but not for $5, not here.

What I wonder is how the ladies in Hong Kong cover their costs. How much is that $5 worth?
