Jason & Audrey’s Wedding (Taboo Resort, Muskoka) by Dave & Charlotte on Vimeo.
My friend Liza suggested one day that I should do something about bridal beauty on BeautyGeeks, seeing as how bridal makeup is one of the things I do. This pretty video album of a couple whose wedding I worked on seems like a good way to start.
I did Audrey’s makeup as well as that of her mum and mother-in-law; hairstylist Alexis Jardin did all the hair. (Shout-out to Audrey’s bridesmaid Tania, a journalist. First on the left in most bridal-party photos, she did the makeup on her fellow bridesmaids. Great job.)
Audrey is a lovely example of my favourite bridal look: fresh and simple makeup that highlights a person’s best features so people see her, not the cosmetics. She also prefers an ultra-natural look, which is easy with her amazing skin, insane long, thick lashes and perfect brows. All she needed was a bit of Smashbox Photofinish Foundation Primer Light to prep, a tiny bit of MAC Select MoistureCover concealer and a light application of MAC Mineralize SkinFinish/Natural powder. Revlon ColorStay Mineral Bronzer in Deep Bronze and Prescriptives In Bloom Cheek Colour Duo 02 played up her getting-married glow.
On Audrey’s green eyes, I used Mary Kay Mineral Colour eye shadow in Crystalline, Spun Silk and Iris, plus a wee dab of MAC Pigment in Frozen White at inner corners, and CoverGirl Lashblast Volume Blasting Waterproof Mascara. The Body Shop Lip & Cheek Stain and Audrey’s own sheer peachy-pink gloss on her lips finished her look.
Enjoy the video by Dave & Charlotte — is it wrong that one of my favourite shots is of Audrey’s feet in their sweet yellow slingbacks? Love.

Beautiful makeup job!! Bride was gorgeous!
Thanks, Joy! That means a lot — you’re such a pro! *beam*
“… seeing as how bridal makeup is one of the things I do,” (and seeing as how there is so much ghastly bridal makeup out there. And you, Janine, have to be a strong voice campaigning against it.)
A theory:
I think there is so much BAD wedding makeup because women have never had their makeup done – ever – and they want all that missed primping done all at once. Years of makeup applications all trowelled on in one day.
That and the fact that they get talked into a lot of that muck by untalented (sorry) salon (sorry, but true) ‘makeup artists’. And they believe that it has to be heavy in order for it to a) last all day, and b) show up in the pictures. Ugh.
Thanks, Liza — I love your theory. I think you’re right about some women wanting all that missed primping done all at once. We all need more occasions (and the funds!) to have a pro pretty us up!
I also think some makeup artist-types feel that they need to do lots on a face because weddings are big experiences and the bride might feel ripped off if she’s not wearing four shades of shadow with super-defined creases. I actually once had a client who felt exactly that way! She wanted a natural, glowy look, then was pissed because I didn’t contour her lids with navy or dark brown shadow! I was not unhappy when she emailed me a week later to say the wedding had supposedly been… postponed.
But but what if your bride has bad oily skin, uncooperative eyebrows and no lashes to speak of? =P
I am so jealous of ladies like Audrey. She looks absolutely lovely btw. =)
You’re right, that happens, too, Kahani! Takes more makeup, but doesn’t have to look like it did. *grin*
And yes, I had to keep my beauty envy under control, especially when it came to Audrey’s incredible naturally thick, long, curled lashes.
It’s been a while Janine! But I always visit you and wonders how you were! :) This is a great video! wonderful makeup! thanks for sharing !!!! *big international hugs*
Thanks for the shout-out Janine. It was really fun, but difficult.
Your work is stunning…that’s why I keep promoting you to all my engaged friends! You really put the art in makeup artist.
And I really like your website. And writing. And humour.
Renaissance Woman, much? Inspiring. Thank you and keep it up.
Hi Nikki — thanks! And *big international hugs* back :-)
Tania, thanks so much! You’ll note I did not detail your wonderful approach to liquid liner. I’ll not forget that, ever. Awesome!
Fantastic makeup, Janine! The best look for brides. It’s timeless and she will never have regrets looking back at her wedding photos 20-50 years from now. Unfortunately, most brides in the ’80s & ’90s slapped on a lot of makeup back then…and those horrid frou frou dresses! You can’t go wrong with simplicity at any point in time. One thing that has stayed are false lashes (it was a requirement for my nearly non-existent natural ones), but it’s more softer and natural looking these days.
Simple and perfect – great job Janine :)
Thanks, Wynne! I totally understand about false-lash love fueled by necessity on account of sparse, short lashes. I was happy when falsies started to flutter back in about 8 years ago; slowly they’re becoming de rigeur for special occasions, especially weddings — yay!
And thanks so much, Sumaya. Easy with such a pretty bride with such great skin and fabulous natural lashes!
Beautiful Job! Janine I didn’t know you were a makeup artist too! I was thinking of getting into it. Any tips? And no I don’t want to do the “beauty department barfed on my face wedding day makeup”, natural is always better:)
Thanks, Monica :-) I got into it years ago by offering my services gratis to friends and family. One bride became a wedding planner; almost all of my business leads back to her one way or another, either directly, or via bridesmaids or wedding guests who saw my work at a wedding — really neat, actually. And my amazing hair-artist friend Alexis and I love working together, so we recommend each other as often as possible. It’s all been lovely and organic, really.
Wow Beautiful bride!!!! Everything just looked soo perfect:) Good job Janine!!
Thanks, Natasha. I have to say Audrey’s genetics made things easy — hers is the kind of pretty face that needs very little in the way of makeup.
