Last year when I was geeking out to Green Beaver’s Alain Ménard about the brand’s Après Ski Winter Lip Balm, a satisfyingly emollient 100% natural chapped-lips saviour, I thought, “a tinted lip balm from Green Beaver would be nice.”
Nice is right. Lightly scented with natural cranberry, and silky smooth with Vitamin E, sunflower-seed oil and Canadian-grown carrot and cranberry-seed extracts, Green Beaver Organic Lip Shimmer conditions without stickiness, and leaves a natural-looking hint of colour. It hits stores within the next couple of weeks.
Made in the company’s new certified-organic production facilities in Hawkesbury, Ontario, the lip shimmer is vegan and certified as an organic cosmetic by EcoCert. A touch of mica adds a subtle shimmer. (Ménard found out the hard way that mica can travel like glitter. After the first attempt to put it into to the lip balm mix, the company designated a special, separate room for the mica-portion of the formulation process in order to keep the shimmer from getting into areas it didn’t belong.)
Green Beaver Lip Shimmer ($5.99 each) comes in six sheer shades, Passion, Bordeaux, Mocha, Amour, Rose and Lustre (clear). I’m already fond of Passion, a rosy hue that would look pretty on cheeks…

First of all, it has to be said that Alain Menard is the nicest guy in the beauty biz, hands down. He’s also smart – SO clever to make a tinted version of this. I’m a big fan of the original and always carry it in my purse.
It’s true — Alain is so great! He’s such a wealth of enthusiastic knowledge. I did an ingredients piece for Cosmetics on lavender; it became one of my favourite stories because he gave me such great, interesting information, the kind of fun details you only get from people who are geeky-enthusiastic about the subject. I’m addicted to the original lip balm, too, and recommend it all the time. Clearly I was excited about this tinted balm because I didn’t even wait for it to hit counter before geeking about it!
