Oh Goody: Petite Bobby Pins and Ouchless Flex Headbands ‘n’ Barrettes

I’m going out on a statement limb: one of this season’s smartest new beauty tools is Goody’s Colour Collection Petite Bobby Pins ($3.49/pk). About two-thirds the size of regular bobby pins, “petite” bobby pins fall into the how-come-no-one-thought-of-this-sooner? category. Next thought: have mini hairpins existed for years only in Asia, where all the quirki-coolest beauty stuff lives?

I hardly ever use hair pins, actually, yet I’ve felt occasional annoyance at the standard bobby-pin length. Sometimes they’re just too long to hide in the hair, and a tad unwieldy when doing the finishing wrap on a ponytail. This smaller size allows for more precise pinning.

Also clever from Goody this Fall are the Ouchless Flex Pressure-Free Headbands ($3.99 each), contoured to fit your lid sleekly without ever digging in, and Comfort-Flex Updo Barrettes ($3.99/pk), simple, flexible, metal-free clips that hold hair fast without making an ouchie impression when you lean back or lie down.

Headgear is making progress.

Goody hair accessories are available at major food, drug and mass market retailers; goody.com.

If anyone at the office comes looking for me, please tell them I have gone to buy out every single Petite Bobby Pin I can find in the city. As a very, very blond blond, I know this “hiding the pin problem” all too well and cannot wait to disguise my bang-clippings a little more elegantly.

Thanks Janine. Brilliant!

Cool! I am the same about bobby pins – they always stick out funny on me. These sound like a great solution!

Laura, you made me laugh out loud with your comment — nice. Aside from the smaller size, that the petites are part of the Colour Collection and come in a subtle-for-blondes shade will be particularly good for your colouring. Coolio!

Michelle, I actually wished for them tonight, and all I was doing was putting my hair up after getting home! These make me want to experiment more with styling, for reals.

I LOVE the smaller pins and the headband… but must admit to being disappointed with the barrettes. I bought one a few months ago and frankly I can’t get it to stay in. I have thick, curly hair and the ‘clip’ part of the barrette keeps coming undone while staying in my hair. The end result is a messy, lopsided look that is just *too* bedhead-ish to be considered fashionable.

The worse is I’m usually not aware of my do’s disposition until much later… If only it would just fall out altogether – At least the result would look more intentional :)

I was about to ask whether you bought the larger-size flex barrettes, Angèle, but of course you did if you have thick, curly hair. You might need to use more than one! While I’m impressed at how much hair one can hold — I can actually just about get mine up in one, which rarely happens with barrettes — thick, truly curly hair is going to test its limits. Sounds like yours exceeded it!

If Goody made the “tongue” part longer, the clip would hold more, actually. I’ll tell them!

totally obsessed with the ouchless headbands. as someone with an abnormally large head, headbands (no matter how cute) just mean a headache for me.

need to grab the small bobby pins, those sound genius!

I bought a headband from this line. But to be honest, it isn’t ‘ouchless’. It actually kind of hurts after wearing for a while. Love the concept though and will check out the bobby pins.

I found them more comfortable than any other rigid headband I’ve worn, Nora. I still can’t wear them because I don’t like the headband feeling in general (delicate head?), but they in no way feel like they’re inexorably prying apart my skull the way others have felt. Lemme know how you like them, and the mini-bobbies, too!

Michelle, thanks for your comment — say hi to Hugh for me! And thanks! Just checked out Lipstick Rules and left graffiti… *grin*

Hah ha! How funny that you popped back to comment again while I was answering your first (and the comment before it), Michelle. I like that you talk about stuff that isn’t necessarily in the mainstream :-)

I love the Ouchless flex pressure free headbands!!! I had given up wearing headbands altogether for several reasons (short hair was a big one!!) including the headaches and the fact that my hair is ultra-fine – quite the opposite problem of Angele. I have NEVER found a hair band that can stay on with out giving me a headache, but this one does!!

I also thought I’d never wear them again because I have taken to wearing glasses (Life gets tough when you get over 40!!), and there was way too much going on right behind my ears with glasses and a headband. However these new headbands actually bend back, away from the ear, so my glasses and headband don’t meet! I giggled when I saw the L and the R on the ends of the band, to help me figure out which way to put it on… knowing me I might have put it on backwards and hated it!

I learned early on with hair accessories not to buy tons till I found out if they worked on my hair. Since this one does, I will now be stocking up!!
