Grey Matter: YSL La Laque Long-Lasting Nail Lacquer in 39, Stormy Grey

by Janine on 13 August 2009 · 16 comments

YSL_StormyGrey_laque39Well hello, my new obsession. From Yves Saint Laurent’s Fall ’09 makeup collection, nail polish — or lacquer if you wanna get fancy — in Stormy Grey. A dark blue-grey, a shade or two darker than it looks in the image, it appears to have a silvery sheen in the bottle but shows hardly a trace of shimmer on nails.

Actually, I’m obsessed with all kinds of grey polish this season. Stormy Grey ($24 CAN/$20 US) got me as soon as I saw it at the press preview — it almost matches one of my soft grey cardies (do not ask me how many grey sweaters I own). One of several tempting trend shades for Fall, grey is insistently calling my name from OPI and Zoya camps, too.

Wait — maybe my obsession with grey polish actually started with a sweet shade of pale grey I spotted on fellow beauty writer Malena Harbers a few months back. She wore Body Language from Essie’s Spring ’08 collection. Pretty, pretty.

Whatever polish piqued my interest, grey has always been my go-to comfort shade, the take-me-seriously colour that says relax. (You know that if you caught my enthusing over the Roots Beach Bucket Bag in Rustler Leather.) If I have more than one grey cardie, you can bet I’ll have more than one grey nail polish before the week is out. I like the idea of seeing grey while I’m tap-tap-tapping on my laptop keyboard. Like writing is relaxing or something.

YSL cosmetics are available in Canada at Holt Renfrew and The Bay flagship stores; ysl.com.

I was on the hunt for gray polish this time last year and couldn’t find it anywhere! Now it’s everywhere – and I still love the look of it.

Know what’s dorky, folks? In the comments of the Roots bag post, I’m totally geeking out about this very polish. I’m consistent. Grey makes me so happy.

My next geek out’s going to be about Armani Fluid Shine 42, a mushroomy grey with a hint of lavender… happy, happy, happy.

I am not a grey fan intrinsically as it doesn’t really flatter me in most of its shades – but I am now completely coming around. Bought some grey shoes yesterday and my FIRST grey cardie a couple weeks ago.

I was reading about the new grey mascaras – I think it was in the new ‘Lucky’ magazine. Thoughts…?

I like that you assured me there’s hardly a trace of shimmer on the nails, because when I saw this photo, that was my first question.

I love this font. I feel so polished using it!

Shell, you’ve picked the right season to get into grey. It’s a big colour this fall/winter, so you’ll be able to find exactly the right shade for your complexion. I suspect you need either deep shades or silvery shades — medium greys not-so-much?

I’m keen to try grey mascara too. I bet it’s gorgeous with light eyes (my friend Julia, who is a total makeup queen and has amazing blue eyes, was raving about grey mascara just yesterday!).

Nothing gives lash drama like black, black, black, though. That said, lashes don’t always have to be dramatic. Grey mascara — or one of CoverGirl’s Exact Eyelights mascaras (they’re metallic; similar effect) — is a soft, pretty finish for maybe a softly romantic look, or a soft, soft, soft smoky eye. Oooh, pretty, pretty!

Katherine, I love that you wanted to know about the shimmer! Know why I mentioned it? Cuz our pal Hannah is no fan of shimmer; it occurred that there might be others out there who feel the same!

I love this font too. I’m pretty sure it’s the same as the one in my previous WordPress theme (Simpla by Phu Ly) — I adored that theme, and make no bones about trying to copy it here. I have to find someplace in this new layout to credit Phu Ly, actually.

I love that every single beauty editor/writer in the city of Toronto–heck, the entire world!–is coveting this grey YSL nailpolish this season.

Folks: that’s a sign. Buy it now!

Too right, Michelle! This grey nail lacquer has turned me into a polish freak this season. This will not be my last post on the subject…

This family ain’t big enough to have two polish freaks.

I claim the title Polish Freak for myself. You may not have it. It is mine. Now hand over the polish, put your hands in the air, and back away slowly – before one of us (that would be you) gets hurt.

Yes I’m with Hannah in that I’m anti-shimmer. I’m really intrigued to see if I’ll love this as much as Sephora by OPI Metro Chic and OPI You Don’t Know Jacques. Both are so creamy and look awesome GLOSSY. Again, I’ve got this anti-matte rage that stews inside me…

You better be nice to me, You, or you won’t even get to TRY this one!

Katherine, I think you’ll actually like Armani Fluid Shine 42 better — it’s a softer version of Sephora by OPI Metro Chic and OPI You Don’t Know Jacques. YSL’s Stormy Grey is much more blue grey than mushroom grey.

Where can I buy the grey nailpolish in Richmond Hill Ontario??
i want to buy it for my 22yr old daughter’s BD.
WHat shade should I get?

Hi Helena,
This one probably isn’t available any more, but a great shade alternative is Essie Chinchilly. It should be available at local beauty supply stores or salons that use Essie nail polish. If you have trouble finding Essie, try calling the company in New York at 1-800-232-1155.

Happy shopping!
