A Good Oil Slick: Clarins Pure Melt Cleansing Gel (plus Dermalogica PreCleanse and Shu Uemura High Performance Balancing Cleansing Oil)

I like to rub oil all over, really massage it around and around and around. Oh, it feels soooo good. Then I like to wet my hands and rub them over the oil. Nice. After that, I rinse thoroughly, follow with my Dermalogica Age Smart Skin Resurfacing Cleanser, rinse and briefly admire my super-clean face in the mirror. (Yes, briefly. Mostly.)

I first fell for cleansing oil when I tried Dermalogica PreCleanse (150 mL, $48 CAN/$33 US), a blend of botanical oils including olive and kukui, plus Vitamin E oil. Aces at dissolving long-wearing and waterproof makeup, water-resistant sunscreen and the day’s sebum and debris, the oil goes on dry skin, becomes milky when water touches it, and rinses cleanly away to leave skin soft and bright. (I use my regular cleanser afterward because I have oily skin, but folks with dry skin don’t need that extra step.)

After my affair with Precleanse, I hooked up with Shu Uemura Skin Purifier High Performance Balancing Cleansing Oil (450 mL, $75 CAN/$62 US) and realized my passion for cleansing oil was more than a flash in the frypan: it was love.

And now I can’t keep my hands off Clarins Pure Melt Cleansing Gel. Made with Marula oil, at first Pure Melt (125 mL, $36 CAN/$30 US) has a texture between honey and silky smooth gel, then liquefies some into a light oil as it’s massaged over the skin. Like the other oil cleansers, it emulsifies easily with water and rinses off without leaving residue. What I like best about this gel formula is that it makes the trip from fingertips to face without a single drip. Genius.

Next on my agenda is getting Clive-O into this oil-me-up game.

Dermalogica is available via select retailers and salons; Dermalogica.com. Shu Uemura is available in Canada at Holt Renfrew and in the US via ShuUemura.com. Clarins is available at select department stores, drugstores and Sephora. Image courtesy of Clarins.

I have never tried any Clarins product but I have tried Shu’s cleansing oil and you are so right about the LOVE thing. I hated putting oil on my face before, I just felt weird doing that in a hot tropical weather, but after SHU, it changes everything!

I know, it initially seems like an odd concept, especially if you have oily skin and have shunned oil-based products your entire skincare life. But we do already know oily stuff takes waterproof eye makeup off better than anything, cuts through the stuff right quick. The cool part is that these cleansers change consistency with water so you can just rinse them off.

Does Dermalogica ever go on sale??? I love so many of their products but the prices hurt my eyes and wallet.

Dermalogica does gift sets occasionally, which usually offer a happy cost break. But not sales so much on individual products. Best to put the word out to family and friends that you need Dermalogica for birthdays, Christmas and Thursdays!

Love both the Shu and the Dermalogica, now MUST try the Clarins one. Did it just launch?

August. And truly, I love that I don’t waste a drop. Used to take a little squeeze bottle of one of the others when travelling; not so good, even in a plastic baggie. This one’s totally travel friendly, easily transferred to one of those squeezies from M.A.C. without the leakage worry enroute. Likey, likey, likey!

Hey Janine, have you ever tried the cheaper version of this by L’Oreal? The Demaq Expert Elixer… oh heck the name is insanely long and changes by continent, so here’s the link to my writeup. I’ve always wondered how it compares since I can’t bring myself to splurge on the Clarins version.

I’m about 6 seconds away from e.mailing the PR person here to find out if it’s available in Canada! I’ve never seen it nor heard of it… my fingers are crossed, though! Thanks, Kahani!
