I Love a Style Change: Michelle Goes Short and Chic

michelle before & after

Who: Michelle Yeh, public relations account co-ordinator, Toronto

What: A cut by stylist Johnny Cupello (a frequent guest on W Network’s “Style By Jury”) that took her below-shoulders hair up to a short, chic ’do.

Where: JC Salons, www.jcsalons.com

Why: “I wanted a drastic change; this is one I could make without regret because a haircut isn’t a permanent thing.”

Follow-up: “It’s all about how you feel inside. For me, if I feel good inside, I am more willing to take chances with my outer appearance (i.e. hair, the way I dress, etc.). This experience has reminded me, though, that it’s impossible to please everyone. People love the new hair, some are indifferent and some prefer long hair in general. It’s all been a learning experience. You learn what makes you feel and look good and what doesn’t. I think the most important thing in regards to style and fashion is finding out what works for you.”

Clearly I love Michelle’s gutsy style change. Her previous look was pretty and youthful, absolutely. But this sharp cut adds authority to her appearance, and a marked air of confidence and sophistication. What do you think?

By the way, within a couple of weeks of the cut, before this post, Michelle quietly went back to a colour that matched her natural hair shade. Looks great. See?

To be honest, I really liked her before haircut!

I liked it, too, truly. Michelle looks really sweet and pretty with the longer hair, plus I actually prefer her darker colour over the highlights. And I expect lots of folks will feel the same way.

But I like what comes with the shorter cut: distinction, authority and assuredness with sass potential. In a way, it’s a great professional move in PR world!

And I don’t say any of this because I have a similar cut. My waves actually make me look more cutesy than in charge, and really I’m too darned lazy to mind. *grin*

I like the new shorter do – short and sassy, what’s not to like? But yes, I’m not so sure about the highlights, wonder how it would look in a darker/before colour, and also with the deeper side-part that seemed to be used in the longer look.

Good for her for going for it, and it’s still long! Longer than mine, anyway ; )

Both hair looks great, longer hair makes her look young and hip, but her short ‘do makes her look more “chic” . She’s pretty so she can pull off both styles!

Hi Janine,
I’ve been meaning to send you a comment for a while. I was faithfully reading your blog, when I came across a post with a very familiar face. (Full disclosure: Michelle works for my agency.)

And I just wanted to say that regardless of hairstyle (I also think both look good), Michelle is superb at her job: smart, professional, eager to learn.

And, because of these characteristics, I’m happy to say that Michelle was recently promoted to account executive.

Thanks for the post.

I love it — Michelle, this counts as an official kudo, so print this page out and put it in your Star File, pronto!

Congrats!

And what a great comment, Martin. Thanks!

I like both styles, but the “after” is definitely more professional and more moderne. Especially love that she went back to her natural hair color, it looks great natural!

I so agree, of course, especially re: Michelle’s natural colour. I’ve never been a fan of un-subtle highlights — actually, I loathe them. In getting rid of them, Michelle amped up the sophistication of the cut.
