Since the temperature’s begun to hold steady in the 20-degrees-plus range, I’ve been obsessed with the airy freshness of this summer’s limited-edition Marc Jacobs Splash trio. The sorbet-inspired scents, Basil, Pear and Grapefruit, are refreshing sensory antidotes to heavy, humid weather.

A zippy green pick-me-up, Basil has freesia, jasmine and orange flower to keep it soft. Almost romantic in its lightly sensuous fruity scent, Pear stays fresh with bergamot and lemon zest. And Grapefruit is bright and citrussy with amber vapours, musk and patchouli for softness.

Each eau de toilette is delightful on its own, but on days you just can’t choose, layer them on for a unique scent of your own. They’re light so you can spritz generously (the 300-mL/10-oz bottle inspires generous application!), and the fragrance lingers subtly for hours.

Delicious.

I wonder how Clive-O feels about sorbet for dessert tonight? And tomorrow night? And the night after that?

Not to mention the scent of grapefruit causes men to perceive you as being on average six years younger than you are - gotta love that ; )

    They all sound delicious!

Hilarious that you mention that! It’s one of my favourite things to tell people; I only just put it in an online article! AWEsome!

LOL, yes, that is funny. It’s one of my favourite things to tell people too. I have a grapefruit scented hair product, but think this eau de toiltte would work much better. Since I’m planning a big 20+ year reunion with old school mates I’ll have to wear it to see if all the guys tell me how young I look - LOL! Then maybe at the end of the night I’ll share my secret…with all the other ladies that is ; )

Do you think this scent would work for fall/winter too? Or only warmer seasons? I wear a summer scent now, all year round, but wonder if this might be too fresh & summery… thoughts?

Good plan for the reunion! At the counter, try spritzing Pear, too — the mix is very pretty.

Lighter scents do fare better in warmer air. Heat releases the scent from the perfume oil and carries it along. You can certainly wear summer scents in the winter, but because they’re usually in eau de toilette or eau fraîche form, they contain less perfume oil. Cold air kind of beats up on perfume oil (makes the molecules sluggish, if you will), so the scent won’t travel as far or linger as long. Most people tend to switch to a more intense fragrance or to an eau de parfum when it gets colder out.

Like you, I stick to airier scents myself, year-round. I don’t care if they’re more subtle in colder weather. If a fragrance makes you feel good, wear it. Bonus: The lighter the fragrance, the less chance there is it’ll get up the noses of sensitive people around you.

    How’s that?

  5. Monica Says:

    Yes, exactly! Thanks!

I love that lighter scents are less intrusive for the sensitive folks ; ) The Pear layering sounds interesting, but geez that will last me forever, if I buy both. My current bottle was bought about 8 years ago (I kid you not!) and still has plenty left.

I hardly ever wear scents, only when I go out at night. Need to start getting out more I guess ; )

I know EXACTLY what you mean — I’ve only ever finished one bottle of scent and it was purse-size! I’ve gotta start wearing fragrance more often. The stuff I love is always such an immediate mood lifter, whether or not the mood was low to begin with!

Even so, that 300 mL WILL last a long time, even if you’re a generous spritzer :-)
